Oscar Piastri Penalized for Impeding Liam Lawson in Italian GP Qualifying
Oscar Piastri has been stripped of third place on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix after stewards ruled he impeded Liam Lawson in qualifying, reshaping the front of Sunday’s starting order.
The incident came in the dying moments of Q2. Piastri left the pits on an out-lap in his McLaren just as the two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson launched into their final push laps, running out of sync with the rest of the pack in a carefully choreographed slipstream plan.
Lawson had first provided Verstappen with a tow. Now Verstappen was returning the favour, trying to drag his team-mate into Q3. It was a neat idea on paper. On track, it ran straight into Piastri.
The Australian did manage to clear Verstappen. Warned that the Red Bulls were approaching, he moved aside as Verstappen bore down on the first chicane and left the reigning champion largely unhindered.
Lawson was not so lucky.
As Piastri rolled into the Variante del Rettifilo, his car sat right where Lawson needed clean air and a clear line. The Red Bull rookie had to check his speed, lost crucial time, and never got it back over the rest of the lap. His shot at Q3 vanished with it.
After qualifying, Piastri was called to the stewards. He explained that he knew the Red Bulls were coming but had not been told they were already on push laps. Only when he saw Verstappen attacking the lap did he fully understand the situation and move aside. By then, his line into the chicane left him with nowhere to escape. Lawson arrived in the worst possible moment.
The stewards acknowledged the awkwardness of the scenario but still came down on the side of a penalty.
In a statement, the FIA said the panel accepted that, with the information Piastri had and the position he found himself in, the McLaren driver “had, at this stage, no other options available and hence, inadvertently, and also unnecessarily, impeded Car 30.” With that, they applied the standard sanction: a three-place grid drop.
The punishment knocks Piastri from third to sixth on the grid.
The beneficiaries sit in red and silver. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are promoted to the second row, slotting in behind front-row starters Pierre Gasly and George Russell. Piastri now finds himself shuffled into the pack, with more work to do on Sunday and less clear air into Turn 1.
For Lawson, the damage was already done in Q2. Missing out on the final segment not only ended his own qualifying ambitions, it also wrecked Red Bull’s carefully laid towing plan. With Lawson out, Verstappen was left to hunt for a slipstream on his own, the team’s idea of using Lawson as a dedicated tow car undermined just as they were trying to offset the world champion’s engine-change penalty that will send him to the back of the grid.
One misjudged arrival at a chicane. A rookie denied a Q3 shot, a future star knocked off the second row, and a front of the grid subtly but significantly rearranged for Monza’s charge to Turn 1.
