John Han Wins 2026 Junior FIA Karting Championship in Macau

On a tight strip of tarmac carved into Coloane’s hillsides, a 12-year-old from Hong Kong offered a glimpse of motorsport’s future – and of what the sport might look like when money matters a little less than raw talent.

John Han arrived at Macau’s Coloane Karting Track on Sunday as one of many hopefuls. He left as the 2026 Junior FIA Karting Arrive and Drive Asia-Pacific champion, thanks to a last-lap overtake that would have looked at home in far bigger machinery.

The move came on one of the trickiest pieces of karting real estate in the region. Coloane punishes hesitation. Han didn’t hesitate. He dived, committed, and made it stick, snatching victory in a race designed to strip away excuses and expose who can really drive.

That is the point of this new championship. Launched last year under the FIA’s global karting plan, the Arrive and Drive concept is deliberately brutal in its simplicity. Drivers turn up at the circuit and are handed identical karts they have never seen before. No private testing. No bespoke setups. No expensive, hand-picked engines.

Engines are routinely swapped between competitors to kill any suspicion of “golden” equipment or “dud” power units. If you want to win here, you cannot hide behind the hardware. You have to be faster, braver, smarter.

For a region still searching for its next standard-bearer at the top of the sport, that matters. Zhou Guanyu, now a reserve driver with new Formula 1 entrant Cadillac, remains the only Chinese racer to have held a full-time F1 seat. His rise answered one question – whether China could produce an elite single-seater driver. Another hangs in the air: who comes next?

Han is nowhere near that conversation yet, and no one inside the paddock is rushing to crown him. But performances like Sunday’s, under pressure, on a notoriously unforgiving track, tend to linger in the memory of those who scout young talent.

The wider idea is clear. By lowering the financial barriers at the base of the pyramid, the FIA is trying to ensure that the next Zhou Guanyu, wherever he or she comes from, is discovered not in a cheque book, but in a braking zone.
