Tottenham have pushed themselves to the front of a crowded European queue for Athletico Paranaense’s highly rated centre-back Arthur Dias, as the 19-year-old’s rapid rise continues to turn heads across the continent.
The left-footed defender has gone from academy hopeful to cornerstone of Athletico’s back line before his 20th birthday, and his trajectory has now carried him all the way to a senior Brazil call-up under Carlo Ancelotti. That invitation alone has shifted the conversation: Dias is no longer just a promising prospect in Curitiba, he is a player with a global spotlight on him.
Spurs step on the gas
Tottenham have not waited for the market to come to them. Scouts were dispatched to the Arena da Baixada earlier this year to watch Dias up close, and those reports were strong enough for the club to open early talks over a potential deal.
The response from Athletico was firm. Their answer was no, and their message was clear: if anyone wants to test their resolve, they will have to start the bidding around €30 million.

Athletico hold the cards – for now
For all the noise around him, Athletico are under no pressure to cash in quickly. Dias is tied to the club until December 2028, a long contract that gives them leverage and time.
Inside the club, the preference is to keep him at least until the end of the current season. They know, though, how this usually ends. A senior Brazil call-up, a growing highlight reel, and a cluster of top European sides circling rarely leads to a quiet transfer window.
Athletico are realistic. A substantial offer that hits their valuation will be listened to. Anything less can wait.
January storm building
With his international recognition boosting his profile even further, the expectation among those close to the situation is simple: the real bids are likely to start arriving in January.
Right now, Tottenham appear the best placed. They have done their homework, made contact and shown a willingness to move early. But every game Dias plays at this level increases the risk for Spurs that another heavyweight will decide this is the moment to strike.
