Premier League Predictions: Key Matches and Insights
Lewis Jones, better known as Jones Knows, has run his eye over a fascinating Premier League coupon this weekend – and he sees fragility, hangovers and a few big prices that look a shade too big.
Brentford vs Chelsea – Bees scent weakness
Chelsea still don’t look built for nights like this.
Brentford under the lights, long throws, deep corners, second balls raining down on a defence that has already shown a soft underbelly. Hull exposed it with a corner that Emi Martinez failed to deal with properly; Brentford specialise in that chaos.
Since the start of last season, among the 17 ever-present Premier League sides, only one team has conceded more set-piece goals than Chelsea’s rate of 0.5 per game. Brentford have repeatedly gone after that weakness. Across the last three meetings, the Bees have averaged 0.73 expected goals from set-plays alone.
Thomas Frank’s side know exactly where to aim. Chelsea look vulnerable, and the market leaves Brentford at Evens in the draw-no-bet line. That feels generous.
Score prediction: 2-1 Brentford.
Tottenham vs Aston Villa – goals in short supply
All the data screams the same thing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium: don’t expect a thriller.
Spurs haven’t scored in four league games. Across that run, they’ve managed just 0.95 expected goals per match. Roberto De Zerbi’s sides at Brighton and Marseille averaged 1.92 goals scored per game. At Tottenham, his team are stuck at 0.73 per game. Something in the environment is clogging the attacking gears. Call it a mental block, call it tension, but it’s there.
Villa aren’t exactly free-flowing either. One goal in the Premier League so far tells its own story. Tottenham dominate the ball and territory without cutting through; Villa are barely getting shots away.
Put that together and the 10/11 on under 2.5 goals looks very hard to ignore.
Score prediction: 1-1
Best bet: Under 2.5 goals (10/11 with Sky Bet).
Brighton vs Arsenal – champions on tricky ground
Fabian Hurzeler hasn’t beaten Mikel Arteta in five attempts, but Arsenal have rarely walked away from these duels feeling comfortable.
Brighton have bloodied the nose of the champions in the numbers if not the scorelines, winning four of the last five expected-goals battles. There has been needle on the pitch and on the touchline, and this doesn’t feel like a routine away day despite Arsenal’s perfect start.
The away win sits at 7/10 with Sky Bet. That looks short given Brighton’s ability to disrupt. The double chance on the hosts at 11/10 holds more appeal.
One subplot stands out. Olivier Boscagli is likely to find himself one-on-one with Bukayo Saka, who looks back to his sharpest. Saka has drawn 13 fouls in three league games; three of those fouls have brought yellow cards. Boscagli has already been booked twice in two games against Arsenal and is 5/4 to commit two or more fouls, 4/1 to be carded. With Saka driving at him, those prices carry an edge.
Score prediction: 1-1.
Everton vs Ipswich Town – back to Leif Davis
Leif Davis caused some pain in the betting columns recently. Backed to score or assist one week, left alone the next… and of course he promptly did both against Crystal Palace.
That’s the game. You dust yourself off and go again.
Davis is not playing like a conventional left-back. He’s an auxiliary winger, constantly stepping into the final third, a regular presence around the box. Two goals and an assist in four Premier League games underline just how high and how often he joins attacks.
Look at the wider picture. Include pre-season and he has four goals in his last seven appearances. For a player starting on the left of a back line, that’s outstanding output.
The standout angle is his shot-on-target price. At 100/30 with Sky Bet for at least one effort on target, the market still hasn’t quite caught up with his role.
Score prediction: 2-1 Everton.
Best bet: Leif Davis 1+ shot on target (100/30 with Sky Bet).
Newcastle United vs Hull City – backing the hangover
When a team gets taken apart, it often doesn’t end when the final whistle blows.
Newcastle were mauled at Leeds. Four down before they found any response, eventually losing 4-1. Matthias Jaissle admitted it was “difficult to digest” and that his young side couldn’t live with Leeds’ physicality. That kind of defeat drains the legs and the mind.
History backs that up. Strip out matches against Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, and look at teams who concede four or more in a Premier League game. In their next outing, they’ve managed just one win from the last 15, with five draws and nine defeats.
Hull or draw at 11/8 with Sky Bet suddenly looks very interesting.
Score prediction: 2-1 Hull.
Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City – McAtee in the firing line
Some prices jump off the page. James McAtee to be carded at 13/2 is one of them.
He’s now operating in the thick of a Premier League midfield, one of the most physical, duel-heavy environments in Europe. In his last two games he has committed seven fouls and been booked twice. He’s effectively stepped into Elliott Anderson’s role as the energetic disruptor in Forest’s engine room.
That kind of profile usually trades much shorter in the card markets. Here, the shift in position and responsibility hasn’t been fully absorbed by the odds.
Score prediction: 2-0 Forest.
Best bet: James McAtee to be carded (13/2 with Sky Bet).
Bournemouth vs Liverpool – Iraola’s return
Narrative doesn’t decide matches, but it can shape them.
Andoni Iraola goes back to Bournemouth for the first time since leaving for Liverpool after three seasons that delivered the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish. The Vitality crowd know him, the players know him, and the occasion will crackle.
History warns returning managers that sentiment rarely brings comfort. David Moyes lost at Everton with Manchester United. Graham Potter lost at Brighton with Chelsea. Thomas Frank drew at Brentford with Tottenham. Brendan Rodgers drew at Swansea with Liverpool. Mauricio Pochettino drew at Southampton with Tottenham.
Those results underline the strange energy in these fixtures. The home crowd is fired up, the players have a point to prove, and the returning manager walks into an emotional storm.
Bournemouth are 19/10 with Sky Bet to win. With the temperature likely to rise, that price won’t be easily dismissed.
Score prediction: 2-1 Bournemouth.
Leeds United vs Crystal Palace – trust the machine
When Leeds are priced right, backing them is rarely a bad long-term strategy.
You know what you’re buying: organisation, aggression, set-piece threat, and a group of players utterly committed to the same blueprint. Since March, they’ve lost just one of 13 league games, winning six and drawing six – the fewest defeats of any side in that spell. The 4-1 dismantling of Newcastle at Elland Road was another emphatic reminder of their formula.
But it’s the first-half numbers that truly impress. Across their last 19 matches, Leeds have conceded just two first-half goals, keeping 17 clean sheets before the break. That level of consistency speaks to a side that hits its structure from the opening whistle.
Crystal Palace, by contrast, have shipped 11 goals in four league games. That fragility meets Leeds’ early intensity, and the Leeds/Leeds half-time/full-time at 7/4 with Sky Bet comes sharply into focus.
Score prediction: 3-1 Leeds.
Manchester City vs Sunderland – Haaland’s unfinished business
There is one Premier League name missing from Erling Haaland’s growing hit list: Sunderland.
He has scored against 24 of the 25 teams he has faced in the competition. The Black Cats are the lone exception. Given his current form, that feels ominous. Haaland has scored in each of his last three league outings and has nine goals in his last nine Premier League games. His latest, the winner at Old Trafford against Manchester United, was another cold, clinical finish.
The straight Haaland-to-score price will be short, so the angle comes in the builder: Haaland to score in a Manchester City win with under 3.5 goals at 11/8 with Sky Bet. Sunderland can be stubborn and City have been efficient rather than explosive, banking wins without turning every game into a rout.
Score prediction: 2-0 Manchester City.
Fulham vs Manchester United – chaos at Craven Cottage?
Michael Carrick does not need another bad result.
One win from four in the league, then a 2-0 lead thrown away against Brighton in midweek. The familiar Manchester United cycle is already humming in the background. The Evens on an away win tempts because Fulham will open the game up, and that suits United’s forwards.
The more compelling angle lies with goals. No two teams have had more touches in the opposition box this season: 139 each. That’s a clear sign of intent, of sides that want to play on the front foot and get bodies into dangerous areas.
One name rises above the rest. Josh King leads the league for touches in the opposition box with 30. He has scored twice from 11 shots, five of which have hit the target. He lives in that penalty area.
So the 11/8 with Sky Bet for both teams to score and King to register at least one shot on target has plenty going for it.
Score prediction: 3-2 Manchester United.
The numbers point one way, the narratives another. By Sunday night, we’ll know which carried more weight.
