Patrick Vieira Sets Heart-First Vision for Senegal, Addresses Mane Omission
Patrick Vieira walked into his first camp as Senegal head coach with one major question hanging over him: where was Sadio Mane?
The omission of the Al-Nassr forward from Vieira’s first squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mozambique and Ethiopia sent a jolt through Senegalese football. No Mane. No explanation at first glance. Inevitably, the rumours started.
Vieira moved quickly to shut them down.
At his introductory press conference following his official appointment on Friday, the former Arsenal and France midfielder made it clear: this was about fitness, not a rupture with one of the country’s greatest players.
“I spoke with Sadio by phone, and he is suffering from a physical problem, which is why he will not be with us in this camp, but he will probably be present in the next camp,” Vieira said, as reported by Senegalese outlet Seneweb.
One sentence, and the tension eased. No exile. No power play. Just a calculated decision to start his reign without an unfit star.
Mane now, project tomorrow
Leaving Mane out of a first squad is still a bold way to begin. The “Lions of Teranga” remain built around the 32-year-old’s aura, even as a new generation pushes from underneath. Vieira’s message, though, was unmistakable: no one, not even the team’s icon, sits above the physical demands of his project.
The door, he stressed, stays wide open for the next international window. If Mane is ready, he comes back. Simple as that.
Behind the clarity on Mane lay another point Vieira wanted to hammer home: he did not take this job for a paycheque.
“My choice was a decision that came from the heart, and not for the money,” he said, batting away any suggestion that the Senegal role was a lucrative detour rather than a genuine mission.
One meeting, one decision
Vieira did not dress up the courtship. There was no long saga, no drawn-out negotiation. One conversation with the federation president was enough.
“From the very first meeting that brought me together with the federation president, I immediately agreed to take on this challenge,” he explained.
That word – challenge – matters. Senegal are African champions in recent memory, but also a team at a crossroads, with senior figures edging towards the twilight of their careers and a wave of emerging talent demanding responsibility. It is the kind of landscape that either intimidates a coach or excites him.
Vieira made it clear he falls into the second category.

What pulled him in? The players.
“There was an exceptional generation of players on the verge of emerging, and there was a real opportunity before me to put my top-level experience at their service,” he said.
That is the core of his pitch. A World Cup and European Championship winner, a former captain under Arsène Wenger, a man who has managed in the Premier League and Ligue 1 – Vieira believes that journey gives him something tangible to hand over to this Senegal side.
His aim is not just to manage a team through a qualifying campaign. He spoke of building “a new project” with the “Lions of Teranga”, working hand in hand with the federation to shape what comes next.
No grand promises. No sweeping declarations. Just a coach staking his reputation on a group he calls exceptional, and a star forward he insists is absent only for now.
The real verdict on Vieira’s heart-led decision will not come in a press room, or in a squad list without Sadio Mane. It will arrive on the pitch, with a new Senegal trying to prove that this generation really is as special as their new coach believes.
