Killian Phillips Joins Ireland Squad After Injury Setbacks
Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to stake his international claim after a double injury setback forced changes to Heimir Hallgrimsson’s Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League window.
Jamie McGrath of Hibernian and Queens Park Rangers’ Harvey Vale have both been ruled out after picking up injuries on club duty at the weekend. Each player pulled up in the warm-up before their respective fixtures – McGrath ahead of Hibs’ clash with Aberdeen, Vale before QPR’s meeting with Preston North End – and medical checks since have confirmed they will play no part in this international camp.
That opened the door for Phillips. The St Mirren midfielder, who has impressed in the Scottish Premiership, will join up with the group in Dublin today before Ireland fly to Pristina for Thursday’s Nations League opener against Kosovo.
It is a demanding schedule. After Kosovo, the Boys in Green head to Debrecen in Hungary to take on Israel, then return to Dublin for a home date with Austria at the Aviva Stadium. The window closes with a second meeting against Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia – a four-game block that will offer Hallgrimsson a sharp look at his options across the pitch.
Phillips slots into a midfield unit that already includes Finn Azaz, Conor Coventry, Jason Knight, Jayson Molumby and Bosun Lawal, adding energy and depth in an area hit by McGrath’s withdrawal.
