FC Groningen Overpowers PEC Zwolle with 3-0 Victory
The scars from 0-7 were still fresh when PEC Zwolle walked into the Euroborg. Ninety minutes later, they left with a different scoreline but the same sinking feeling. FC Groningen were sharper, stronger and far more ruthless, cruising to a 3-0 win that lifted them to sixth and dragged PEC down to 16th.
From the first whistle, there was no sense of a side still finding its feet at this level. Groningen pressed high, snapped into challenges and moved the ball with purpose. PEC Zwolle, still reeling from that hammering by Feyenoord, never settled. Every misplaced pass seemed to carry a little extra weight.
The breakthrough came after 20 minutes and felt inevitable. Marco Rente stepped in with authority, slid a clever ball into the channel for Jorg Schreuders, and Groningen were in. Schreuders never panicked. He drew the defence, looked up, and rolled the ball back into space for Thom van Bergen. One touch, calm finish, 1-0. Simple on the eye, brutal in its timing.
The goal only deepened the contrast between the sides. Groningen sensed vulnerability and leaned on it. PEC Zwolle tried to play out, tried to stitch a few passes together, but their confidence wobbled with every Groningen press.
The pressure told again before the break. Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area and Schreuders pounced. This time he didn’t look for a teammate. From outside the box, on his supposedly weaker left foot, he drove a clean strike past the keeper for 2-0. A gift, but one seized with conviction.
Zwolle finally stirred after the interval. For a brief spell, the rhythm of the game changed. They pushed higher, found a bit of width, and for the first time the home crowd felt a flicker of concern. Gabriël Reiziger darted to the near post to meet a low cross from the left and managed to get a touch, but the ball slid just wide of the far post. A half-chance, but it was at least a sign of life.
Groningen did not allow it to grow into anything more. Dick Lukkien’s side managed the tempo, broke up play and kept Zwolle at arm’s length. Whenever the visitors hinted at momentum, a Groningen shirt stepped in, a foul was drawn, a simple pass reset the pattern.
On 68 minutes, the contest was finished with a training-ground flourish. Awarded an indirect free-kick in a promising position, Groningen unveiled a rehearsed routine. A short touch, a set, and Tygo Land thundered his shot into the top corner. The strike was as emphatic as the scoreline: 3-0, and the Euroborg roared its approval.
From there, it could have become a rout. Van Bergen almost added his second of the night when the ball broke kindly to him in the box. He swung his left foot, but this time the contact deserted him and the chance went begging. It didn’t matter. The damage was already done.
By the final whistle, Groningen looked every inch a side on the rise, their sixth-place position a fair reflection of a team playing with clarity and bite. PEC Zwolle, now 16th, leave with another heavy result on their shoulders and a clear question hanging over them: how many more blows like this can they absorb before the season’s fight becomes a full-blown struggle for survival?
