FC Cincinnati have made one of the boldest moves of the MLS season, prising Tyrell Malacia away from European football and handing the Dutch defender a fresh start in the United States.
The former Manchester United left-back joins the Eastern Conference contenders on a free transfer, signing a deal that runs through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 MLS campaign. For a club that has steadily climbed from expansion hopefuls to genuine challengers, this is a move that underlines intent.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get the deal over the line, Cincinnati’s front office had to work the MLS rulebook hard. The club acquired an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money in the opposite direction.
That’s not a routine bit of housekeeping. It’s a clear signal that Malacia is being brought in as a central piece, not a luxury addition. General Manager Chris Albright made no secret of his delight, describing the arrival of a player with Malacia’s background and experience as a major boost for the squad.

For Malacia, the move is also a line in the sand.
He arrived at Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2022 and started brightly under Erik ten Hag, his aggressive pressing and sharp positioning quickly earning trust. Then came the interruptions. His medal collection backs that up. Malacia was part of the United squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, ending a long wait for silverware at Old Trafford. More recently, he returned to the Eredivisie on loan and contributed to PSV Eindhoven’s title-winning 2024-25 campaign, adding another major honour to his résumé.

Malacia does not arrive in MLS as an unknown quantity. He is a Netherlands international with nine senior caps and a World Cup on his record. He was part of the Dutch squad that reached the quarter-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, another stage where the margins are thin and the pressure unrelenting.
