Erling Haaland Joins Premier League Elite with 25 Goals Against 25 Teams
Erling Haaland has carved out another slice of Premier League history – and he’s done it with his usual, ruthless simplicity.
A second-half strike in Manchester City’s 5-3 win over Sunderland did more than pad out the scoreline. It completed a full set. The Norwegian has now scored against every single Premier League side he has faced: 25 opponents, 25 victims.
One chance. One finish. One more milestone.
He stands in rare company. Only Harry Kane has managed the same feat in the competition’s history, the England captain having found the net against all 32 clubs he has faced in the league. Different eras, different styles, same cold efficiency in front of goal.
The numbers tell a more nuanced story, though. Haaland and Kane may boast a perfect record against their respective lists of opponents, but they are nowhere near the top when it comes to the sheer variety of teams they have punished.
That honour belongs to Frank Lampard. Long before his current role at Coventry, Lampard spent nearly two decades arriving late in the box and picking out corners for West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City. Between 1997 and 2015 he scored 178 Premier League goals, spread across an unmatched 39 different opponents. No striker’s pedigree, no poacher’s instinct – just a midfielder who seemed to appear, unmarked, exactly where it hurt most.
Behind him sits Andrew Cole, another name etched into the league’s early years. The former Manchester United forward scored against 38 different clubs, a testament to his longevity across Newcastle, United, Blackburn, Fulham, Manchester City and Portsmouth.
Then come the heavyweight finishers of English football’s modern history. Alan Shearer and Jermain Defoe both struck against 37 different teams, Shearer doing it as the league’s all-time leading scorer, Defoe as one of its most persistent and clever penalty-box predators.
Wayne Rooney and Teddy Sheringham follow, with 36 and 35 opponents respectively. Rooney, all snarl and swagger, scoring every type of goal imaginable. Sheringham, the thinking forward, timing and touch carrying him through an era of change.
The roll call at 34 opponents reads like a Premier League hall of fame: Thierry Henry, Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Ryan Giggs. Five players, five distinct styles, united by the same habit of tormenting new opposition as easily as old.
Haaland’s list is shorter for now, but that may not last. If he scores against Hull City this season, the number of Premier League opponents he has faced – and punished – will rise to 26. Given his strike rate, few would bet against it.
Lampard’s record of 39 different opponents still looks distant, a monument built over years of relentless output. Yet Haaland is only at the beginning of his Premier League journey, and the division keeps refreshing its cast of characters.
The names on his list will grow. The only real question is how many clubs will be left untouched by the time he is finished.
