Djed Spence Set for Inter Milan Debut in October
Djed Spence has yet to kick a competitive ball for Inter, but the long wait in Milan is almost done. The English defender is expected to be ready for his Nerazzurri debut when Serie A returns after the international break in October, according to Gazzetta.
The 26-year-old arrived from Tottenham in the summer on a permanent €35m deal, a clear statement from Inter that he was not brought in as a squad filler. Yet fans have only seen him in pre-match warm-ups and training clips. No minutes. No real glimpse of how he fits into Cristian Chivu’s system.
The reason has been simple and stubborn: fitness.
Spence reported to Inter still feeling the effects of a demanding World Cup campaign with England. While the rest of the squad settled into Chivu’s early-season rhythm, the new signing was kept on a separate programme, working away from the group to rebuild match sharpness and avoid the kind of early muscle injury that can derail a season before it starts.
The images tell the story. In August at San Siro, he walked the touchline in Inter colours before the match against Monza, close enough to the action to taste it, but still a spectator. In July, in Atlanta, he had thrown himself into tackles in a World Cup semi-final against Argentina, a world away from the controlled, tailored sessions he has been put through in Appiano Gentile.
The plan is now entering its final phase. Gazzetta report that Spence will continue to train separately this week, staying on his personalised schedule for a few more days. Then comes the key step: a return to full group training next week, when Inter’s non-international players reconvene.
Chivu has given his squad a full week off during the break, a rare breather in a packed calendar. Once those days are over, the real countdown begins. Players not away with their national teams will be back on the training pitch on Monday, and Spence is expected to fold into that core group as Inter build towards their first game after the pause.
That fixture is already circled: October 10, Parma at San Siro.
By then, the expectation inside the club is that Spence will finally be available for selection. Not a long-term project. Not a name on an injury report. A real option on the team sheet.
For Inter, it means the €35m investment can start to influence the pitch rather than just the balance sheet. For Spence, it is the chance to move on from the stop-start opening to his Italian adventure and show why a World Cup run with England convinced one of Europe’s biggest clubs to bet on him.
