Cole Palmer Withdraws from England Squad Due to Injury
Cole Palmer’s international reboot has been put on ice.
The Chelsea forward is set to pull out of England’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures after suffering a minor injury, cutting short what was supposed to be his return to the Three Lions fold.
It comes at a delicate moment in his England story. Recalled by Thomas Tuchel after being controversially left out of the World Cup squad, Palmer had been handed a second chance and a clear challenge. Tuchel made it public: Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”.
Now he won’t get the stage.
A Recall Halted
Palmer’s withdrawal follows a full 90 minutes for Chelsea in their 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, a bruising night that now looks even more costly. The injury is described as minor, but with an extended international window ahead, England’s medical staff and Tuchel have opted for caution.
The timing is harsh. After a summer on the outside looking in, having missed out on the World Cup, Palmer has responded at club level exactly as his critics demanded. He has started six of Chelsea’s seven games this season, completing the full 90 minutes in five of them. His output has matched the workload: four goals, two assists, and a growing sense that he has become one of Chelsea’s primary attacking reference points.
That form had pushed him back into the England conversation. Now it pauses the narrative just as it was starting to build.
Nations League Without Palmer
England face a demanding four-game block in the Nations League over the extended break. First up is a glamour tie against World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September. From there, Tuchel’s side head to the Czech Republic on 29 September, then Croatia on 3 October, before returning home to host the Czechs on 6 October.
It is exactly the sort of run where a creative, in-form forward could have strengthened his case for a permanent role in the squad. Instead, Palmer will watch from a distance as others seize the minutes he had hoped to make his own.
Lingering Fitness Questions
Palmer’s body has been part of the story for a while. In the 2025-26 season he was repeatedly hampered by a recurring groin problem, an issue that never seemed to fully clear. Enzo Maresca, then Chelsea manager and now in charge at Manchester City, openly questioned the nature of the problem, saying it “did not make sense”.
The echoes of that campaign will not be lost on either club or country. Even if this latest setback is minor, the pattern invites scrutiny. For a player whose game relies on sharp movement in tight spaces, any recurring groin concern is a red flag.
England Career on Hold
Palmer’s last England appearance came in March, in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan. That outing already feels distant, separated by a World Cup snub, a summer of frustration, and a club resurgence that was supposed to reset his international prospects.
This recall was meant to be the restart. Instead, it becomes another pause.
Tuchel will now have to reshape his attacking options for a demanding Nations League schedule without a player he had challenged so publicly. Palmer, meanwhile, returns to Chelsea to recover, rebuild, and wait for the next opening.
For a 24-year-old entering what should be his prime years, the question lingers: how many more chances can he afford to see slip away before he finally nails down that England shirt?
