What made the performance more significant was the churn in the team sheet. Skubala leaned on those who have been waiting, watching, and training in the shadows.

“Lots of changes for the lads that haven't played many minutes,” he said, and there was a clear satisfaction in his voice. Those fringe players, often judged on cameos and cup ties, delivered when the league pressure bit hardest. “They showed today as a good group, a true group and a squad.”

This was not a night for individuals. It was a night for a squad proving it can stretch without snapping.

“We have to be proud of the guys, who have come in and put a performance in, who haven't had so many minutes but we're going to need them all,” Skubala added. That line carried a message beyond the dressing room door: nobody is just making up the numbers.

The clean sheet mattered too. Bristol City have been too generous this season, and Skubala made that a clear internal challenge.

“The lads were challenged with getting a clean sheet because we haven't had enough of them,” he admitted. They met that challenge, and their manager was “really proud of that because it just shows the growth we're going through.”

One goal, one shut-out, one badly needed response. For a team trying to build something under a new manager, nights like this can change the temperature of a season.
