Arsenal's Search for Left Winger Hits Dead End with Liverpool's Ngumoha
Arsenal’s search for a new left winger looks set to hit another dead end, and this time the door is being shut from inside Anfield.
Liverpool’s highly rated teenager Rio Ngumoha, a player firmly on the radar of the Premier League champions, is moving towards committing his future to the club, with both sides now working to turn an agreement in principle into a long-term contract.
Arsenal looking, Liverpool locking in
Arsenal’s need is obvious. They went into the 2027 season hunting for a left-sided attacker, failed with moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior, and never truly replaced Gabriel Martinelli. The gap in the squad has lingered, and with January approaching, the expectation around the Emirates has been that someone would arrive to fill it.
David Ornstein has already hinted that he “could see something happening” in the winter window. Naturally, that put any top young winger in Europe under the microscope. Ngumoha, just 18, sits near the top of that list.
Liverpool, though, have never sounded remotely open to the idea.
TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new deal. Those discussions have now moved into the final phase, with talks ongoing to formalise the contract. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, there is little expectation of late drama.
Liverpool, he explained, are “desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha,” with the player understood to be happy at Anfield and set for regular starts this season. That pathway has been crucial. Ngumoha believes in it, and Liverpool believe in him.
The pressure from outside clubs, then, has only hardened Liverpool’s stance.
“Not for sale” – and they meant it
Fabrizio Romano has echoed the same message that has been coming out of Liverpool for months. Bayern Munich and other clubs circled in the summer, but the response from Anfield did not shift: Ngumoha was not leaving, not for sale, not even up for discussion.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano reported, underlining how firmly the club see him as a central part of their long-term plans. For a player widely regarded as one of the standout talents in his position, interest was inevitable. Actual negotiations were not.
Now Arsenal have joined the list of admirers. Their interest, as Romano pointed out, stems from the obvious vacancy on the left after Martinelli’s departure and the reshaping of their attacking options. They moved Leandro Trossard on and brought in Christos Tzolis, but chose to ride the season with what they had rather than force a deal.
That has left them scanning the horizon for 2027, 2028 and beyond. If a chance to move for Ngumoha ever arises, Arsenal would be there. So would clubs from abroad. Everyone in the market knows that.
But right now, that chance does not exist.
Arsenal wait, Liverpool build
Inside Liverpool, the focus is on closing the deal. Conversations over the finer points of Ngumoha’s new contract are active. The club must still deliver the guarantees the player wants and find the right balance on every detail, but the mood on both sides is positive.
O’Rourke has spoken of optimism at Anfield. Romano has stressed that Liverpool are in ongoing talks and want to keep “the boy.” The direction of travel is clear: Liverpool intend to build around Ngumoha, not cash in on him.
For Arsenal, it points to another near miss in a position they have been trying to solve for months. For Liverpool, it looks like the quiet securing of a cornerstone for the next era.
The wider market will keep watching. If Ngumoha continues on his current trajectory, the interest will only intensify. The question is not who wants him.
It is how long Liverpool can keep everyone else at arm’s length while they shape a team around one of their brightest young assets.
