Zaheer Khan Takes Over as Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings have turned a monumental page in their history. After nearly two decades under Stephen Fleming, the franchise has handed the reins to one of India’s finest fast bowlers of the modern era: Zaheer Khan.
The former left-arm spearhead will take over as CSK head coach from IPL 2027, stepping into a role that has been synonymous with Fleming since the league’s early years.
End of an Era, Start of Another
Fleming’s 18-year association with CSK defined the franchise. He arrived as a player, evolved into the tactical heartbeat in the dugout, and helped turn CSK into one of the IPL’s great dynasties. His departure to take up a full-time role with England cricket — and, since July, as their men’s Test head coach — left a vacancy that could not be filled lightly.
CSK have not gone for a safe, anonymous option. They have gone for a name, a presence, a cricketing brain that commanded dressing rooms for over a decade.

From Strike Bowler to Strategic Boss
Zaheer retired from the IPL in 2017 after representing Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. His playing numbers tell their own story: 100 IPL matches, 102 wickets at 27.27. Across formats for India, 610 international wickets and a reputation as the man who cracked open big games.
Since putting the ball down, he has quietly built a second career in the game.
At Mumbai Indians, he moved upstairs as Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019, later taking charge as their head of global development. He worked behind the scenes on structure, scouting, and shaping fast-bowling resources — the sort of long-term thinking that franchises now crave.
Most recently, he was appointed mentor at Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025, a short but notable stint that ended before the following season. Each role nudged him closer to this moment: running a powerhouse franchise from the front.
“An Honour” to Join CSK’s Legacy
Zaheer did not hide what this move means to him.
"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history," he said in a statement released by the club.
He knows the noise, the pressure, the heat of Chepauk. He has bowled into that roar. Now he will try to harness it.

CSK’s hierarchy made it clear this is not a symbolic appointment.
Owner Rupa Gurunath underlined the franchise’s belief in Zaheer’s track record and temperament.
"We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer's distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise."
The message is simple: CSK see him not just as a big name, but as a builder.
Managing Director KS Viswanathan went straight to the heart of Zaheer’s cricketing value.
“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s. He's one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family."
Those words matter at a club that has long prized continuity, calm and clarity in leadership.
A Different Kind of CSK?
This is more than a change of coach. It is a shift in personality.
Fleming’s CSK sides were built around stability, experience and a core group that barely changed. Zaheer arrives with a background steeped in talent development and modern franchise structures. He has seen how Mumbai Indians built cycles of success. He has worked in a newer setup at Lucknow. He understands the demands of fast bowling in a league where pace is both weapon and vulnerability.
For a team that will need to refresh its core over the next few seasons, especially in the pace department, that combination is no accident.
The yellow of CSK will remain the same. The noise at Chepauk will not dip. But with Zaheer Khan now calling the shots, the way this team evolves from here could look very different.
