Wu Bin: Legendary Martial Arts Coach Defying Age

At 89, most people slow down. Wu Bin laces up his boots.

The legendary martial arts coach, best known as the mentor who spotted an eight-year-old Jet Li in 1971 and helped turn him into a global action icon, still runs every day and plays regular football. No glasses. No hearing aids. Just the sharpness and spring of a man who has lived his own philosophy of discipline.

Wu has spent a lifetime proving that wushu is more than performance or competition. For him, it is a way of building habits that last longer than medals, film careers or fame. His own body has become the evidence. Decades after first stepping onto the training floor, he remains in what he calls “fighting form”, moving with the ease of someone who never stopped treating training as a non-negotiable part of life.

One of the founders of the Beijing Wushu Team, Wu helped drag the traditional martial art into the modern sporting era. He trained generations of athletes to treat wushu as an elite discipline, not a stage show. His eye for talent changed Chinese sport and Chinese cinema: when he picked out the young Li in 1971, he did more than discover a prodigy. He set in motion a path that would carry Li from national championships to movie sets around the world.

The influence did not end with one star pupil. Wu’s coaching tree now stretches across decades and families. At the 18th Hong Kong International Wushu Competition, which he recently presided over, he watched Dragon He, son of another of his former students, Jaden He Jingde, step into the arena. A third generation, still shaped by the same standards he demanded in Beijing all those years ago.

Rather than retire, he continues to travel widely, turning up at events and training halls to encourage his disciples’ disciples. He offers the same message he has lived: talent starts the journey, but habits finish it. The daily run. The regular game. The refusal to drift into comfort.

For Wu Bin, age has become one more opponent to outwork. And so far, it is the one that cannot catch him.
