Southend United Sign Ryan Battrum on Loan for Promotion Push

Southend United have dipped into the Premier League talent pool, bringing in West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a month-long loan as Kieron Dyer sharpens his squad for an early promotion push.

The 21-year-old, who can also slot into midfield, already knows Roots Hall from the other side. He featured against Southend for West Ham in a pre-season friendly back in July, a run-out that clearly left an impression on both player and club.

"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. He has watched them closely, too. Crowds of 10,000 in the National League don’t just catch the eye; they shape decisions. For a young defender looking for real football, that kind of stage matters.

Dyer’s Southend sit fifth in the early National League table, beaten just once in seven games. The foundations are solid. Now comes the fine-tuning.

"It's always good to have two players for every position," Dyer said, underlining that this is as much about standards as it is about depth. Battrum arrives to push Vontae Daley-Campbell hard at right-back, not simply to cover him.

Dyer likes his full-backs aggressive, energetic, and comfortable stepping inside. Battrum, he believes, fits the brief: power, strength, the legs to get up and down, and the tactical flexibility to invert when required. In the manager’s words, he “ticks all the boxes.”

The timing is no accident. Battrum is available immediately and could make his debut in Tuesday’s home clash with Tamworth, under the lights, in front of those same 10,000 he has admired from afar.

Now he gets to feel that noise from the pitch, not the bench.
