The six-time world champion boxer has landed in the middle of an online storm after a remark on Bigg Boss 20, where viewers felt her pride in her own journey spilled over into a slight on other Indian women athletes.
The remark that lit up social media
The moment came during a casual conversation, the kind that usually drifts by unnoticed on a long-running reality show.
On the Salman Khan-hosted Bigg Boss 20, fellow contestant and singer Qazi Touqeer was speaking about Indian women who have lifted the country’s sporting profile. He began naming names that have become shorthand for Indian excellence: Sania Mirza in tennis, Saina Nehwal in badminton.
“Hamare yahan sports mein kaun kaun ladki ne kamal kiya hai, Sania Mirza also did great, Sania Nehwal…,” Qazi said, as he tried to list some of the trailblazers.
Mary Kom didn’t let him finish.
“Lekin mere jaisa koi achieve nahi kiya,” she cut in. “But no one achieved what I did.”
She pointed to her own record as she spoke, a record that needs no embellishment. Six world titles. The first Indian woman boxer to win an Olympic medal. The only boxer, man or woman, to claim six world championships.
Inside the house, it was a brief interruption. Outside, it was a spark.
Pride or put-down?
The clip travelled quickly across X and Instagram. It was shared, clipped, re-captioned. The words were replayed far more times on phones than they had been heard on television.
Many viewers felt Qazi Touqeer had simply been trying to acknowledge some of India’s most visible women athletes. To them, Mary Kom’s interjection shifted the tone from celebration to comparison.

As the backlash built, Mary Kom’s camp did not let the controversy fester.
From her official account, Team Mary Kom issued a clarification and apology, stressing that the comment was not intended as a slight against Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, or any other athlete.
“We apologise if Mary’s words were misunderstood. There was never any intention to demean or compare the journey with that of another athlete. Mary has immense respect for every athlete who represents India and gives their heart and soul to the sport,” the statement read.
The message underlined a broader point about how the champion views the wider sporting fraternity: “Every journey is unique, every achievement matters, and every medal makes India proud.”
The intent was clear — to pull the conversation back from a perceived rivalry narrative and place it where Mary Kom has often stood publicly: as a vocal supporter of Indian athletes across disciplines.
A year of uncomfortable headlines
This is not the first time in 2024 that Mary Kom has found her words under the microscope.
In February, she faced criticism over comments about her divorce from her former husband, including the claim that he had “ek rupiya bhi nahi kamaya”. That remark too drew sharp reactions, and she later released an apology video, saying her words had been taken out of context and insisting she had not meant to hurt anyone or make a sweeping statement.
For a figure who built her legacy with gloves on and head down, the transition into the relentless, reactive ecosystem of reality television and social media has been anything but gentle.
