Glamorgan Signs Seren Smale: A New Era for Women's Cricket

Glamorgan have moved decisively to anchor the future of their women’s side, securing the signing of highly rated wicketkeeper‑batter Seren Smale from Lancashire on a three-year deal.

For the county, it is a statement. For Smale, it is a homecoming.

Born in Wrexham, the 21-year-old returns to the Welsh game just as Glamorgan ramp up preparations for entering Tier One in 2027. The timing is no coincidence: this is a club building a spine for the professional era, and Smale is right at the heart of that plan.

“Being Welsh and being able to represent Glamorgan professionally brings me so much excitement,” she said. “It’s where I started my cricket journey and I can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings.”

Those roots run deep. Smale first picked up a bat at Buckley Cricket Club before rising quickly through the ranks, catching the eye with her clean ball-striking and sharp glovework. She became a regular for Thunder between 2021 and 2024, gaining valuable experience in regional cricket and on some of the biggest domestic stages.

Her progress carried her into the international spotlight. Smale has already played two T20 internationals for England and represented the national Under-19 side at the 2022 ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup, a tournament that showcased her temperament under pressure as much as her talent.

Glamorgan know exactly what they are getting – and exactly why they wanted her early.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have Seren join Glamorgan for the next three years,” said Aimee Rees, the club’s head of women and girls cricket. “She is incredibly proud to be Welsh, and she was someone we identified early as a key target for our recruitment strategy.”

The fit is obvious. A young, international‑level keeper‑batter with Welsh roots, arriving just as the county steps into a fully professional landscape. Smale will link up with her new teammates for pre‑season later this year, with the 2027 campaign already looming large in the planning rooms at Sophia Gardens.

Rees is clear about the impact she expects.

“She brings real quality and valuable experience to our squad, with experience in The Hundred and at international level. We know she will make a big impact, and we’re excited to see her continue to develop and perform on the biggest stages in a Glamorgan shirt.”

Smale is not arriving in isolation. Her signing follows a flurry of activity that has rapidly reshaped Glamorgan’s women’s professional ranks.

Batter Bethan Gammon, 25 and from Pontypridd, has already committed her future to the county, joining all-rounder Bethan Ellis and batter/wicketkeeper Abbey Freeborn, both of whom had spent the last two seasons on loan from Warwickshire. All three now have contracts in place, giving the squad a stronger, more settled core.

They join captain Lauren Parfitt as Glamorgan’s first full-time female players – a landmark moment for the club and a clear signal of intent.

With Smale now in the building, that intent feels sharper. Glamorgan aren’t just edging towards Tier One. They are sprinting towards it, with a young Welsh international ready to help lead the charge.
