Philippe Coutinho Joins Neymar at Santos: A Long-Awaited Reunion
Philippe Coutinho is back in Brazil and back alongside Neymar – this time in the white of Santos.
The Brazilian club confirmed on Monday that Coutinho has joined for the rest of the season, reuniting two of the most gifted players of their generation, who until now had only shared a dressing room in the national team.
A reunion years in the making
Their careers have long circled each other without quite touching at club level. Coutinho lit up Anfield during a five-year spell at Liverpool before earning his move to Barcelona in January 2018, winning two LaLiga titles in Spain. Neymar, though, had already gone. He left Barcelona for Paris St Germain in August 2017, just months before Coutinho arrived.
They became symbols of different eras at the Camp Nou, never crossing paths in club colours. Only the yellow shirt of Brazil ever brought them together.
Now it is Santos that finally does.

Santos released a video of Coutinho’s arrival, walking into the dressing room to find Neymar waiting. The greeting was warm, the message simple.
"If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up," Neymar told Coutinho.
For all their shared history with the national team, this is new ground. The pair have never played together at club level, not in Europe, not in Brazil. That changes in the Brazilian top flight, with both men back where it all began for Neymar and where Brazilian football first took notice of Coutinho.
From Europe’s summit back to home soil
Coutinho, 32, last played for Brazil in March 2022. His club journey has taken him from Rio de Janeiro to Liverpool, Barcelona and beyond, before a return to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in 2024. That homecoming was brief; he left Vasco in February this year, searching again for the right stage.
Neymar, now 34, made his own high-profile return to Santos last year. After Brazil’s World Cup exit in July, he announced his international retirement, closing one chapter while opening another back in Vila Belmiro.
Two former pillars of the Seleção, now side by side in a club shirt at last. For Santos, it is a bold bet on star power and nostalgia. For Coutinho and Neymar, it is a late-career alliance that Brazilian fans have waited more than a decade to see.
The only question now is whether this long-delayed partnership can still bend matches – and perhaps a season – to its will.
