Chelsea Faces Triple Absence: Pedro, James, and Caicedo Miss Training
Chelsea’s week began with a jolt of anxiety at Cobham.
During the open section of Tuesday’s training session, Pedro, Reece James and Moises Caicedo were all absent from the main group, according to Sky Sports journalist James Savundra. For a side already wrestling with rhythm and consistency, losing their standout performers from the early weeks of the season is the last thing Alonso needed to see.
Pedro missing after electric start
Pedro’s no-show will alarm supporters most. The Brazilian has been Chelsea’s spark and safety net rolled into one, dragging them through tight moments and lighting up games with end product.
- Three goals.
- Three assists.
- Five matches.
He has carried the attack, and his most recent contribution – a late, ice-cool equaliser at Hull City on Saturday – underlined just how central he has become to this team’s identity. When Chelsea needed someone to steady the ship, Pedro stepped up, again.
To then watch a session without him, only days later, changes the mood in an instant. From optimism to unease.
James absence raises fresh questions
If Pedro has been the flair, Reece James has been the heartbeat.
Shifted into a central midfield role this season, the club captain has embraced the responsibility, completing the full 90 minutes in three of Chelsea’s four league fixtures. He ended the draw at Hull looking strong, without any obvious sign of discomfort or fatigue.
That is what makes his sudden disappearance from the main training group such a sharp concern. Captains set the tone, and James has been at the centre of Alonso’s tactical reshaping. Take him out, and the entire structure starts to look different.
Chelsea will now be desperate for clarity: is this precaution, or something more serious?
Caicedo’s stop-start season continues
Caicedo’s absence, by contrast, did not come out of the blue.
Alonso had already warned that the Ecuador international’s return would not be rushed. The 24-year-old has endured a stuttering start to the campaign, his progress repeatedly checked by a persistent physical issue.
He missed the opening weekend against Fulham, then briefly reappeared with a 14-minute cameo in the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton. That short outing proved costly. The injury flared again, ruling him out of subsequent clashes with Arsenal and Leeds.
Asked last week about the chances of Caicedo featuring in Friday’s game, Alonso drew a clear line.
“Not yet, we’ll see for Brentford,” he said in his pre-match press conference, stressing that Chelsea are “not at a moment to take risks with him. Not yet; we are not yet.”
Those words now hang over every training report. Until Caicedo strings sessions together, talk of a full return remains just that – talk.
A glimmer of good news
Amid the concern, there was at least one encouraging sight for Chelsea’s staff and supporters.
Summer signings Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson both trained fully with the squad on Tuesday, integrating properly as they move closer to long-awaited debuts. For weeks, they have been names on a team sheet in waiting; now they are edging into Alonso’s real options.
Their timing could prove crucial. If Pedro, James or Caicedo are forced to miss Friday’s clash, Chelsea will need fresh legs and fresh voices to steady the dressing room and reshape the game plan.
Injuries are beginning to crowd the narrative around this team. The question now is simple: can the new faces step in quickly enough to keep Chelsea’s season on track?
