Barcelona have nailed their colours to the mast for 2026-27, and the armband tells its own story.
Hansi Flick has broken with tradition, stepping in himself to name Raphinha and Pedri as Barcelona’s primary captains. No seniority chart. No slow climb up the ladder. The coach pointed straight at two of his on‑pitch lieutenants and handed them the responsibility.
The rest of the leadership group came the old-fashioned way. Inside the dressing room, the players voted, and three names emerged: Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong, and Lamine Yamal.

It was the sort of raw, unfiltered comment that usually stays buried in the noise of a dugout. This one didn’t. When Rodri realised the exchange had gone public, his response underlined why coaches trust him. He personally phoned Valencia captain Jose Gaya to apologise, then addressed the incident publicly after Barcelona’s Champions League win over Feyenoord.
No armband. Plenty of accountability.
Inside the club, no one is waiting for a formal title to validate his authority. Staff already see him as a key guide for 19-year-old defensive midfielder Marc Bernal. The two have begun to share minutes, Bernal stepping in alongside the former City star in recent wins over Feyenoord and Levante. For a young pivot learning one of the most demanding roles in European football, there are few better reference points.
This is the paradox of Barcelona’s captaincy right now. The armband reflects institutional memory, long relationships, and the unspoken hierarchy that builds over years at the Camp Nou. Rodri simply hasn’t had the time to write that chapter yet. But when the ball rolls and the pressure tightens, his voice already carries like that of a long‑standing leader.
Barcelona will need every ounce of that experience in the coming weeks.
Next month brings a brutal 12-day stretch that will test Flick’s project and this young squad’s nerve. Galatasaray away. Real Betis away. Paris Saint-Germain away. Three hostile environments, three different tactical puzzles, almost no margin for emotional dips.
Then comes the night that will define the mood around the club: El Clasico at Camp Nou on October 25.
For Rodri, that game carries an extra edge. He turned down serious interest from Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid to choose Barcelona this summer. The decision already gave this rivalry another storyline. His first Clasico in blaugrana will sharpen it.
