Abishek Porel Granted Bail After 36 Days in Custody

Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been released on bail by a Chinsurah court after spending more than a month in judicial custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case.

The order, reported by ABP Ananda and corroborated by multiple outlets, comes 36 days after the Delhi Capitals player was arrested on August 11.

Allegations and legal trail

The case stems from a complaint lodged by a medical student from Karnataka at Mogra police station on June 23. In her complaint, she stated that she had been in a relationship with Porel for about three-and-a-half years and that the two had planned to marry. She also claimed they had travelled abroad together during this period.

According to her account, the relationship broke down when Porel later denied it, which she says led her to approach the police. She further referred to an earlier dispute between them around one-and-a-half years ago that had drawn police intervention, though no formal complaint was filed at that time.

Police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the BNS, and also invoked Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. The proceedings included allegations of rape, criminal intimidation and other offences.

The matter escalated to the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel. The court also ordered the seizure of his electronic devices amid concerns about possible circulation of photographs of the complainant.

Porel was produced before the Chinsurah court after his arrest. His initial plea for bail was rejected, and he was sent to judicial custody. With Thursday’s decision, that spell behind bars ends at 36 days. Porel has previously denied the allegations.

Rising career under cloud

Away from the courtroom, Porel’s trajectory had been sharply upward.

The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter joined Delhi Capitals in 2023 and made his IPL debut that season. He scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise during the 2026 campaign, offering flashes of the clean ball-striking that made him a talking point in domestic circles.

Across formats, he has already built a solid body of work. Porel has played 35 T20 games, scoring 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of 145.37, with four half-centuries to his name. For Bengal, he broke into first-class cricket in the 2021-22 season and quickly settled as a regular, turning out in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games.

Now, with bail granted but the case very much alive, the young keeper-batter stands at a stark crossroads: an emerging career on one side, a serious criminal trial on the other.
