Virginia Tennis Shines at Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia’s fall season didn’t so much ease into gear as snap to attention in Chapel Hill.

At the Kitty Harrison Invitational, staged Friday through Sunday at the Chewning Tennis Center, first-year standout Shannon Lam announced herself in style. Dropping into collegiate tennis for the first time, Lam tore through her eight-player flight, stitching together three straight wins to claim the title and set an early marker for the Cavaliers’ campaign.

Her surge headlined a productive weekend for Virginia. Behind her, a trio of teammates quietly built their own momentum. Katie Rolls, Alyssa James and Blanca Pico Navarro each pieced together two singles victories, driving through their respective draws and into the finals of their flights. Different courts, different opponents, same theme: Virginia players playing deep into the schedule.

For a program with postseason ambitions, that matters. The Kitty Harrison isn’t about trophies for the cabinet as much as it is about rhythm, toughness and early answers. On that front, the Cavaliers left Chapel Hill with exactly what they wanted: match wins, confidence, and the sense that their younger players can carry weight immediately.

There’s no time to linger on it.

Next comes Cary, N.C., and a far bigger stage: the ITA All-American Championships, running Sept. 19-27. It’s the first gateway to the NCAA Individual Championships, the event where the nation’s elite start to separate from the pack.

Virginia heads there with a freshman already holding a flight title and three more players fresh from finals runs.

Now the question is simple: can this early spark carry into one of college tennis’ toughest proving grounds?
