Usama Mir Rejoins Worcestershire for County Championship Run-In

Worcestershire have turned to a familiar face for their County Championship run-in, re-signing Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir for the remainder of the season as a replacement for all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel.

Mir, who made his first-class debut for the Pears in 2023, will slot straight back into red-ball duty and is available for the club’s final three Division Two fixtures. That sequence starts on Tuesday with a home game against Northamptonshire, a contest that could go a long way to shaping Worcestershire’s finish.

This is no short-term stranger walking through the door. Mir has already been a central part of the club’s white-ball plans this year, having signed a three-year T20 deal earlier in the season. His role at New Road is only set to deepen: from 2027 he will be classified as a local player, a significant asset in an era of tight overseas regulations.

For now, though, Worcestershire want his overs, his nous and his control.

“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” head coach Alan Richardson told the club’s website.

The timing was tight. Swanepoel’s absence forced Worcestershire into the market late, with little room for error. Mir’s familiarity with the dressing room and conditions made him the obvious call.

“Given the short turnaround we had to act swiftly to find a replacement, so to be able to add him to the squad before Tuesday is a real boost for us,” Richardson said.

A boost, and a statement. With three games left and promotion ambitions and pride still in play, Worcestershire have chosen reliability over risk. Now it falls to Mir to turn that faith into wickets when Northamptonshire arrive.
