Truro City Manager John Askey Critiques Omar Bogle's Red Card

John Askey did not try to dress it up. He could not.

Truro City’s manager watched new signing Omar Bogle see red in stoppage time of a grim 1-1 draw with Walton and Hersham, then called the dismissal exactly what it was: indefensible.

Bogle, 33, brought in last month to add nous and presence to The Tinners’ attack, was sent off deep into added time after kicking out at Kleyton Junior. A flash of temper, a moment of retaliation – and the referee had no choice.

Seconds later, Truro equalised. The irony was hard to miss. On a day Askey labelled his side’s worst performance of the season so far, they salvaged a point just as their most experienced forward walked down the tunnel.

“You can't defend that. It shouldn't happen,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall, his frustration directed not at the officials but at his own player.

This is no raw youngster learning the edge of the professional game. Bogle has more than 300 Football League appearances behind him, with spells at Wigan Athletic, Crewe Alexandra, Charlton Athletic, Cardiff City and Newport County. Truro signed him for exactly that experience, hoping he would steady them in tight moments, not ignite them.

Instead, with the game stretched and emotions running high, he reacted. Askey acknowledged the provocation – “when somebody's grabbing hold of you” – but his message was blunt: that is no excuse.

For him, the only acceptable response is footballing, not physical: “keep playing, get hold of the ball, put ball in the back of the net.”

Truro did find that late goal, but now they must cope without Bogle just as he was settling into his fourth appearance for the club. A red card, a suspension, and a manager left to “deal with that” in the coming weeks.

The equaliser may have softened the scoreline. It did nothing to soften Askey’s view of a moment that cut straight across the standards he is trying to set.
