Surrey Signs Nathan Sowter on Multi-Year Deal

Surrey have moved early to sharpen their white-ball armoury, landing Durham and England Lions leg-spinner Nathan Sowter on a multi-year contract from 2027.

It is not a move out of the blue. It is a return.

The Australian-born 33-year-old knows the Kia Oval square and outfield as well as most Surrey regulars, having spent the past five seasons there in The Hundred colours of Oval Invincibles and MI London. Now he comes back not as a visitor, but as one of their own.

“When the opportunity to move to Surrey came up, it made sense for me and my family,” Sowter told Surrey’s website. “Club cricket in the county gave me my shot at professional cricket, so it is nice to return as a Surrey cricketer.”

That line matters. Sowter’s story with Surrey started long before the contract was signed.

His professional career took off at Middlesex in 2015 after he impressed in club cricket for Normandy, the Surrey-based side that opened the door to the county circuit. From there, he built a reputation as a clever, attacking leg-spinner and a canny operator in the squeeze overs, traits that made him a valued pick in franchise leagues.

Durham secured his services in 2022, adding experience and nous to their white-ball plans. Across his T20 career he has collected 196 wickets in 195 matches, a body of work built not just in England but through stints in the Caribbean Premier League and the International League T20 (ILT20).

Those numbers tell their own story. So does Surrey’s decision to tie him down on a “multi-year deal”, even if the club have chosen not to reveal the exact length. They are betting on a specialist who understands the rhythms of short-form cricket and the demands of high-pressure overs under lights at the Oval.

Sowter will not arrive until the 2027 season, but Surrey have made their move early. In a white-ball era where wrist-spin remains a prized commodity and experience in global leagues carries weight, they have gone back to a familiar face who first earned his chance on their club grounds.

Now he returns with a full career behind him, and a fresh chapter to write in Surrey colours.
