Santos Lift FIFA Transfer Ban with Neymar's Agency Support
Santos have wriggled free of their FIFA transfer embargo – and it took a lifeline from Neymar’s camp to make it happen.
The Brazilian club have cleared a debt of R$12 million (£1.7m/$2.3m) owed to Monaco over midfielder Jean Lucas, a sum that had left their transfer activity frozen since July. The payment, fuelled by an immediate capital injection from NR Sports, removes the sanction and reopens the doors of the transfer market at a moment of real sporting and financial strain.
In return for that cash, Santos and NR Sports – the agency run by Neymar’s family – will share the rights to negotiate and commercialise kit sponsorship space that has not yet been sold. It is a deal born of urgency, but also of convenience: Santos needed money fast, and Neymar’s business arm saw an opportunity to deepen its ties with the club that launched his career.
The club confirmed the end of the embargo in an official statement on Thursday, stressing both the financial rescue and the renewed freedom to trade.
“Santos FC have settled the Transfer Ban and are once again clear to operate in the transfer market. The operation was made possible thanks to the support of NR Sports, through which the Club received an immediate financial injection. In return, Santos FC and the company will jointly negotiate kit sponsorship inventory that has not yet been commercialised,” the note read.
It is an emergency fix for a club still walking a financial tightrope. Santos continue to wrestle with an estimated total debt of around £13m and had watched their squad thin out dangerously while the embargo held. With the ban now lifted, the focus turns to reinforcing a group that has been stretched close to breaking point.

Top of the list: Arthur Melo.
The former Juventus and Barcelona midfielder has been identified as the primary target, according to Diario Sport. The plan is clear. Bring in a playmaker capable of dictating tempo, add control to a side that has been living on the edge in domestic competition, and stabilise a team hovering just two points above the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation zone.
Arthur, if the deal is completed, would walk into a dressing room under pressure and a fanbase demanding an immediate response. The expectation is that he can provide exactly that – an instant injection of quality and calm in the centre of the pitch for a Peixe side that has too often looked fragile.
Critical Timing
The timing could hardly be more critical.
Santos face Corinthians this weekend with that slender cushion above the drop zone on the line. The match arrives as part of a brutal stretch in which the club must juggle survival in the league with a daunting Copa do Brasil assignment.
Neymar is set to return to the starting lineup after missing the 3-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil quarter-final. His comeback offers both a technical upgrade and a psychological lift for a team that looked blunt and outgunned in his absence.
At Vila Belmiro, the calendar now feels like a series of must-win nights. On one front, there is the need to chip away at a three-goal deficit against Palmeiras in the cup. On the other, the obligation to collect points against a Corinthians side led by Memphis Depay and eager to drag Santos deeper into trouble.
The FIFA ban is gone. The transfer market is open again. The money from NR Sports has bought Santos time and options.
What it cannot buy is breathing space in a league table that still makes grim reading.
