Nottinghamshire Signs New Zealand Keeper Mitchell Hay

Nottinghamshire have wasted no time replacing Kyle Verreynne, moving swiftly to sign New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay for the run-in to their County Championship title defence.

Hay, 26, lands at Trent Bridge just two days after Verreynne’s latest stint was abruptly cut short by a recall from Cricket South Africa over the weekend. The timing could hardly be more awkward: three Championship matches remain, and Notts are deep in the scrap to retain their Division One crown.

Director of cricket Mick Newell did not disguise the disruption, calling Verreynne’s departure with so much on the line “not ideal”. Head coach Peter Moores struck a similar note of frustration, but the mood changed quickly once Hay’s signing was confirmed.

Moores hailed the Black Caps international as a “hugely exciting” and “quality” addition, and crucially, one tailor-made for the role Nottinghamshire need in the season’s decisive stretch.

“He is a mature keeper with the ability to bat in the top six, which fits the role we need coming into the business end of the season,” Moores told the club website.

That versatility matters. Notts sit second in the Division One table, only four points behind leaders Somerset, and every run, every chance taken behind the stumps, will carry extra weight over the coming weeks.

Hay arrives with a solid body of work from his domestic career with Canterbury in New Zealand. He has already passed 2,100 first-class runs, scoring them at an average of 45.14, numbers that underline why Nottinghamshire have turned to him at such a critical moment.

A mid-season change of keeper is rarely part of a champion’s script. But with the title race tightening and Somerset in sight, Hay now walks straight into the heart of it.
