Matchday 2 Predicted XIs as Premier League Takes Shape
The opening weekend has stripped away some of the guesswork. Managers have shown their hands, new signings have had their first taste, and systems are beginning to settle. With that in mind, these are the projected line-ups for Matchday 2 – shaped by first-week selections, tactical habits, fitness, suspensions and early transfer business.
As ever, late press conferences and team news can tilt everything, but the early picture already tells a story.
Crystal Palace vs Manchester City
Palace look set to lean into a compact 3-4-2-1 again, a shape built for suffering without the ball and springing quickly when they win it back. Dean Henderson is tipped to keep his place in goal, shielded by a back three of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Chris Richards and Canvot.
Out wide, Daniel Muñoz and Tyrick Mitchell are expected to patrol the flanks, with Daichi Kamada and Adam Wharton offering control and legs in central midfield. In the pockets behind the striker, Dwight McNeil and Yeremy Pino provide creativity and work rate, with Jean-Philippe Mateta the focal point up front.
City, by contrast, remain City – but with a twist in personnel. A 4-2-3-1 is anticipated, Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal behind a back four of Khusanov, Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol and O’Reilly.
The double pivot of Anderson and Marc Guehi gives Pep Guardiola a solid platform, freeing Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo to buzz around between the lines. Erling Haaland, inevitably, leads the line.
Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest
At Anfield, Liverpool are expected to stick with a 4-2-3-1 that bristles with attacking intent. Alisson stands in goal, with Jeremie Frimpong, Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez across the back.

Coventry City vs Hull City
Coventry appear ready to continue in a front-foot 4-3-3. Carl Rushworth should start in goal, protected by Milan van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda and Jay da Silva.
Yirenkyi, Grimes and Onyeka form a busy, hard-working midfield three, while Tchaouna and Mason-Clark flank Taiwo Awoniyi in a direct, powerful front line.
Hull are also expected to line up in a 4-3-3, hinting at an open contest. Tzolakis is tipped to start in goal, with Ajayi, Egan, Mendy and Coyle across the defence.
In midfield, Crooks, Slater and Giles bring balance between graft and creativity. Up top, Belloumi and Stroud support Oli McBurnie, whose physical presence remains central to Hull’s attacking plan.
Bournemouth vs Everton
At the Vitality, Bournemouth are set for a flexible 4-2-3-1. Petrovic should continue in goal, with Adam Smith, Hill, António Silva and Adrien Truffert forming the back four.
Lewis Cook and Scott anchor midfield, giving licence to an attacking trio of Rayan, Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier. Evanilson is expected to spearhead the attack, tasked with finishing the intricate build-up behind him.
Everton, chasing stability, mirror the shape. Jordan Pickford starts behind a defence of Röhl, James Tarkowski, Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko.

Leeds United vs Brentford
Elland Road should stage a tactical duel between a back three and a back four. Leeds are tipped to go 3-4-2-1, with Trafford in goal behind Joe Rodon, Bijol and Muharemovic.
Jayden Bogle and Justin operate as wing-backs, flanking a central pair of Ethan Ampadu and Stach. Wilson and Brenden Aaronson support Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose hold-up play will be vital.
Brentford stick to their trusted 4-2-3-1. Kelleher is expected in goal, with Kayode, Kristoffer Ajer, Collins and Lewis-Potter in defence.

Sunderland vs Fulham
At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland are projected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 that blends youth and experience. Roefs starts in goal, with Meunier, Daniel Ballard, Alderete and Reinildo across the back.
