Labuschagne Omitted as Australia Prepares for World Cup
Twelve months out from the World Cup, Australia have delivered a blunt message to Marnus Labuschagne: his place in the ODI setup is no longer guaranteed.
The batter has been left out of the squad for the limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa after a lean run in 50-over cricket on recent trips to Pakistan and Bangladesh. He is one of five players cut for September’s six-match series, alongside Matt Short, Ben Dwarshuis, Todd Murphy and Liam Scott.
For a player once viewed as a three-format cornerstone, the omission is stark. The World Cup will be staged in the same countries next year. Australia are clearly choosing their horses now.
New faces, new stakes
While Labuschagne steps aside, the door opens for youth.
Victorian teenager Ollie Peake has been handed a chance to impress with the bat, a significant show of faith at this stage of the cycle. NSW all-rounder Joel Davies is also in line for a maiden ODI cap, with selectors keen to see how his game translates to the international stage in Zimbabwe.
Chairman of selectors George Bailey framed the tour as a crucial dress rehearsal.
“This six-game series is an important lead-in to next year's World Cup, being played in the same countries, for the group,” Bailey said. “As such it's great to have Mitch (Marsh), Travis and Josh returning, then Pat and Mitch (Starc) for the SA leg. This gives us our core of players mixed with some we think will continue to make an impression.
“For Ollie and Joel, who we rate very highly, it's another fantastic opportunity and a further chance for them to continue their exposure and growth in the Australian team.”
The message is clear: the incumbents must prove they belong, and the rookies must show they can handle the jump.
Big guns commit to the cause
Any doubt about Australia’s intent around the World Cup vanished with the names of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc on the team sheet.
Both fast bowlers have been selected, underlining their plans not just to spearhead the campaign next year but to hit the Australian summer in full rhythm. Their presence gives the squad a hardened spine, wrapped around returning figures such as Mitch Marsh, Travis Head and Josh Inglis.
Australia will play three ODIs against Zimbabwe on September 15, 18 and 20, before facing South Africa on September 24, 27 and 30. Six games, two countries, one long audition.
For Labuschagne, the writing may be on the wall. For Peake and Davies, the wall is blank, waiting to be written on.
