Kate Koval Transfers to Baylor Amid War Impact

Kate Koval, a rising Ukrainian center who walked away from Louisiana State University over the signing of a Russian player, has landed at one of the powerhouses of women’s college basketball: Baylor.

The 20-year-old has been cleared to play for the Bears after the NCAA granted her a transfer waiver at LSU’s request, allowing her to move despite the transfer portal having closed in April. It is an unusual step, reserved for what the governing body describes as extenuating, non-sporting circumstances outside an athlete’s control.

For Koval, those circumstances are not theoretical. They are war.

The 6ft 5in forward featured in all 35 of LSU’s games last season, averaging 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per night and looking settled in a program that lives in the national spotlight. Then came a jarring twist. The SEC giants announced the arrival of 17-year-old Russian prospect Anna Minaeva. Soon after, LSU confirmed that Koval had left after her freshman year, citing only “personal reasons”.

Koval chose to spell those reasons out herself.

“My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” she wrote on Instagram, explaining that Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine lay at the heart of her decision to leave Baton Rouge. She described the war as something painfully close, not a distant headline: loved ones killed and wounded, childhood places reduced to rubble by missile strikes.

“For me, this war is not distant or abstract,” she wrote. The timing of Minaeva’s signing, against that backdrop, forced her to confront a brutal question: could LSU still be the right place for her?

Ultimately, she decided it was not.

Once the transfer window closed, Koval’s only route to a new team ran through the NCAA’s waiver process. The rules are strict. To be eligible, the triggering event must have occurred after the last opportunity to enter the transfer portal and must be unrelated to sport itself. LSU asked the NCAA to approve Koval’s move under those terms, and the request was granted, clearing the way for her switch to Baylor in Texas.

The Bears gain a proven interior presence with high-major experience and a player carrying far more than box-score numbers into the locker room. LSU, meanwhile, face scrutiny over how the situation unfolded, with questions lingering about the conditions attached to the waiver request. Koval now starts again in Waco, her career moving on even as the war that shaped her decision shows no sign of ending.
