Justin Arana Activated for Gilas Pilipinas vs Iran in FIBA Qualifiers

Justin Arana steps into the spotlight on Sunday, activated for Gilas Pilipinas’ clash with Iran in the fourth window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Converge big man replaces Carl Tamayo, who hurt his ankle during the Nationals’ nail-biting 82-81 escape against Jordan in their opening game of the window. Tamayo’s setback opens the door for Arana’s long-awaited debut in national colors, after he had already been part of the initial call-ups before preparations began.

It’s a baptism that comes with real responsibility.

Arana joins a frontcourt loaded with size and contrasting styles: Kai Sotto’s length and mobility, June Mar Fajardo’s low-post power, and AJ Edu’s energy and rim protection. Justine Baltazar and Troy Rosario add more options inside, giving coach Tim Cone a deep rotation of bigs who can bang, stretch the floor, or run in transition.

On the wings, Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos, and Chris Newsome bring versatility and playmaking, capable of sliding between positions and covering gaps at both ends. Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, and Juan Gomez de Liaño will handle the ball and the tempo, each offering a different rhythm — Thompson’s rebounding and hustle, Perez’s attacking bursts, Gomez de Liaño’s composure and scoring touch.

Across the floor waits an Iranian side with something to prove.

Iran heads into Manila stung by a 93-91 loss to New Zealand in its first outing of the window, a result that sharpens their edge for this second game. Gilas, fresh from surviving Jordan, now leans on a refreshed frontline and a new face in Arana, as the qualifiers tighten and every rotation change starts to matter a little bit more.
