Julian Alvarez Standoff: Barcelona Move Denied, Arsenal Interested

Julian Alvarez has not set foot on Atletico Madrid’s training pitch since being told, bluntly and privately, that his dream move to Barcelona is off the table. For the Argentina striker, all roads out of the Metropolitano now appear to lead in one direction: Arsenal.

According to sources spoken to by BBC Sport, Atletico informed Alvarez and his representatives earlier this week that they will not enter talks with Barcelona over any transfer. Not now, not in the coming days. The message was clear, and it has triggered a standoff.

Alvarez, 26, has since missed two straight training sessions, with illness given as the reason. The timing has only sharpened the sense of tension around the club.

Atletico have not tried to disguise their position. They issued two public statements in 24 hours to hammer home the same point: Alvarez will not be allowed to join Barca. No compromise, no middle ground.

If that door is bolted shut, another has quietly opened.

Atletico are prepared to sell Alvarez to Arsenal and have already held direct talks with the Premier League champions over what would rank as one of the standout deals of the summer window.

Atleti director Mateu Alemany travelled to London last week and, as understood, met with Arsenal officials. During those conversations, Atletico made their stance plain: any deal for Alvarez will start at 150m euros (£128m). That is the price of changing their No 9’s shirt from red and white to red and white with gold trim.

Mikel Arteta wants him. Desperately. Arsenal’s manager sees Alvarez as a key piece to elevate his side again this season. Yet the move has stalled on one crucial detail: the player’s determination to join Barcelona instead.

Even so, talks between Atletico and Arsenal over a club-to-club agreement have been described as positive. The framework is there. The numbers are on the table. The hold-up lies with Alvarez himself.

Should the striker give Arsenal the green light in the coming days, the expectation is that the transfer would accelerate quickly. The hard work between the clubs has largely been done. The final decision now rests with a player torn between his preferred destination and the only viable exit route his employers are willing to sanction.

The war of words escalated on Wednesday. After Barcelona president Joan Laporta publicly insisted that Barca still wanted to sign Alvarez, Atletico fired back with a statement that left no room for interpretation: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”

On Thursday, the club’s hierarchy went even further.

“The members of Atletico de Madrid's board of directors have unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club's decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona,” read a second statement, doubling down on the hard line from the boardroom.

So the situation is brutally simple. Barcelona want Alvarez. Alvarez wants Barcelona. Atletico refuse to sell to Barcelona. Arsenal are ready, willing, and already talking numbers.

Something has to give.
