Jersey Secures Victory Against Guernsey in Inter-Insular Clash

Jersey’s hold over their oldest rivals remains unbroken. Another inter-insular, another home win. This time by five wickets, with 13.2 overs to spare, but the story at Grainville was not as straightforward as the margin suggests.

Chasing 162 after restricting Guernsey to 161 all out in 48.4 overs, Jersey were rocked early. 21 for 3 in the ninth over. The home crowd, so used to serene one-day dominance since 2015, suddenly had reason to shift uneasily in their seats.

Guernsey had come to scrap. They found their lengths, hit the seam, and dragged the game into a contest Jersey did not expect to stroll through. The visitors’ opening burst carried exactly the “passion and fire” Jersey head coach Neil MacRae had warned about, and for a while the favourites looked rattled.

Then Ben Ward took control.

Where others prodded, he drove. Where Guernsey sensed a collapse, he calmly shut the door. Ward’s unbeaten 82 became the spine, the heartbeat and the finishing touch of the chase, a mature innings that refused to be hurried even as the scoreboard pressure eased.

Crucially, he found an ally. Harrison Carlyon joined him to rebuild, their partnership draining Guernsey’s early momentum and turning a precarious position into a platform. Once the pair settled, the target of 162 began to look what it always should have been: modest.

The pressure that Guernsey created with the new ball slowly evaporated as Ward picked gaps and rotated strike, then punished anything loose. By the time the fifth wicket fell, the game was already drifting away from the visitors. Ward stayed, anchored the innings, and walked off unbeaten with the job done at 162 for 5 in 36.4 overs.

It all stemmed from Jersey’s work with the ball. After Guernsey’s promising start, the hosts dragged them back, squeezing runs, forcing mistakes and never allowing a defining partnership. To hold their rivals to 161, on home turf, in a 50-over contest of this intensity, underlined the discipline and clarity that have underpinned Jersey’s run of one-day success over their neighbours.
