Gloucestershire Signs Young Fast Bowler Che Simmons on Loan

Gloucestershire have moved early to secure one of county cricket’s most intriguing young quicks, bringing in fast bowler Che Simmons on loan from Warwickshire for the rest of the season ahead of a permanent switch in 2027.

The 22-year-old will slot straight into Gloucestershire’s push to finish the County Championship campaign with momentum, available for their final three matches of the summer. His future is already mapped out too: a two-year deal is in place from next season, signalling a long-term investment rather than a short-term patch.

Simmons broke into Warwickshire’s County Championship side in 2024, but opportunities have been scarce. Just three first-class appearances have followed, much of his work coming in the second XI, where his pace and potential have been evident but largely hidden from the wider circuit.

The move is about changing that. Regular first-team cricket was, Simmons admitted, a “big factor” in his decision to leave the Bears and commit to a new project. At 22, overs matter more than sentiment.

Gloucestershire director of cricket Jon Lewis made the club’s stance clear, describing Simmons as “a hugely talented young cricketer with a very high ceiling”. For Lewis, this is the right time to push the fast bowler out of the shadows and into the Championship spotlight, arguing that after extensive second-team experience at Warwickshire, Simmons now needs to “take the next step and showcase his abilities at first-team level”.

For Gloucestershire, it is a calculated move: a raw, quick seamer with room to grow, dropped into the pressure of immediate Championship action and then handed the security of a multi-year deal.

For Simmons, it is simpler. Three games now, a new home to come, and the chance to prove he belongs at the sharp end of the county game.
