Collyer Joins West Brom as Morrison Wins Tug-of-War

Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is set to join West Bromwich Albion in a deal that underlines both the Championship club’s ambition and the player’s need for a clear stage to grow.

United have agreed an initial £3m fee for the 22-year-old, with performance-related add-ons taking the package to £7.6m. A hefty 40% sell-on clause is also included, a sign of how highly United still rate his long-term potential even as they cash in now.

This was not a straightforward decision for Collyer. The midfielder had been weighing up offers from both West Brom and Hull City, two clubs who know him well after loan spells during the 2025/26 season. At one point, West Brom looked in control. Then Hull appeared to surge ahead in the race.

The pendulum swung one last time.

James Morrison stepped in and made the difference. The West Brom boss, who worked with Collyer during the first half of last season, pushed hard to bring him back to The Hawthorns. Despite Collyer’s game time being restricted by injury during that spell, Morrison had seen enough. The energy, the intelligence off the ball, the willingness to take responsibility in midfield — it all left a mark.

That impression has now turned into a permanent move.

For Collyer, the promise of minutes mattered. The prospect of increased playing time is understood to have been decisive, with West Brom offering a clearer pathway to a regular starting role than he could expect at Old Trafford or in a more crowded Hull midfield.

West Brom get a young, hungry midfielder who already knows the club and the demands of the division. United bank a fee with significant upside built in. Collyer gets what every 22-year-old needs most: a manager who believes in him, and a league that will test exactly how far that belief can take him.
