Brydon Carse Under Investigation for Alleged Assault in Derby

Derbyshire Police are investigating allegations of assault after England fast bowler Brydon Carse was briefly handcuffed and detained outside a Derby nightclub at the weekend.

Images shared widely on social media on Sunday showed the 31-year-old in handcuffs, surrounded by officers, during a night out in Derby on Saturday. The scenes, filmed outside Molly Malone's bar in the city centre, quickly spread, dragging the Durham quick into an unwelcome spotlight just days before a Test match.

Police confirmed Carse had been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, but only for a short period.

"A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night," Derbyshire Police said on Monday. "However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area."

That initially appeared to be the end of the matter. It was not.

By Wednesday, the tone had shifted. In a fresh statement, Derbyshire Police said: "We are investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing."

Carse has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. The England and Wales Cricket Board has also declined to expand on its position.

The ECB did act, though. Once the footage surfaced and the incident became public, the governing body confirmed that the Cricket Regulator would investigate. Carse was then withdrawn from England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan, a stark and immediate consequence for a player attempting to cement his place in the national setup.

His domestic employers have taken a different stance. Durham have named Carse in their County Championship side for the match against Gloucestershire, keeping him in the fold while the police and regulatory processes play out.

For now, there are more questions than answers. A brief arrest, a swift de-arrest, and an escalating inquiry into alleged assault have left one of England’s pace options facing scrutiny off the field at a time when competition for spots in the Test attack is as fierce as it has been in years.

How this investigation unfolds could shape not just Carse’s short-term availability, but his longer-term standing in an England dressing room that has little tolerance for off-field distractions.
