Bruno Fernandes: The Captaincy Alternative for Gameweek 2
Bruno Fernandes is used to carrying Manchester United at Old Trafford. This weekend, he might end up carrying a huge slice of the Fantasy Premier League field as well.
In a Gameweek 2 shaped by familiar fear around Erling Haaland’s ownership, Fernandes stands out as the one captaincy alternative with the numbers – and the fixture – to justify turning away from the Norwegian.
Haaland’s shadow – and his stumble
The pattern is already set. Haaland, priced at £15.5m, walks into every season as the automatic armband choice. Gameweek 1 was no different: 4.38 million managers handed him the captaincy, dwarfing the 1.48 million who backed Fernandes. Ownership told the same story: 67.9 per cent for Haaland, 48.5 per cent for the United playmaker.
Both returned the same outcome: nothing of note. Two points each. Two blanks. Two huge chunks of the game left frustrated.
Yet that stalemate in points opens a door. Haaland goes to Crystal Palace on Friday night, a ground where he can, of course, explode, but where his 2025/26 record away from home looks a touch more human than many might remember.
Across last season’s away fixtures, Haaland managed four double-digit hauls and blanked seven times in 18 matches. His 6.6 points per start on the road is still elite, but it isn’t untouchable.
Old Trafford belongs to Bruno
Fernandes at Old Trafford is a different story altogether.
No player scored more points in home matches last season. He turned United’s stadium into a Fantasy stronghold, producing eight double-figure returns in 17 home games – double Haaland’s tally of big away hauls.
The reliability is what really bites. Fernandes blanked in just three of those 17 home outings. Seventeen goal involvements (goals plus assists), 7.3 points per start, and a constant role at the heart of everything United do in possession. Penalties, set-pieces, creativity from open play – the entire attacking ecosystem flows through him.
Now he welcomes promoted Ipswich Town to Old Trafford on Sunday. A newly arrived side, still adjusting, up against United’s main man in his favourite setting. For FPL managers willing to step out from under Haaland’s shadow, this is the week the numbers almost demand it.
The chasing pack: Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro
If Fernandes is the standout alternative, he isn’t alone in offering a genuine threat to Haaland’s Gameweek 2 supremacy.
Martin Odegaard, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro all opened the 2026/27 campaign with the kind of statement Fantasy managers love: immediate double-figure hauls.
Odegaard, at £6.6m, operated in the most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz in Arsenal’s win over Coventry City, scoring and finishing on 11 points. It was the kind of performance that reminded everyone why he remains such a sharp Fantasy asset when given license to push high.
His next assignment is an Aston Villa side reeling from a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Villa Park is rarely straightforward, but Arsenal will fancy themselves against a defence that just crumbled.
Palmer and Joao Pedro, both at Chelsea, wasted no time either. Away to Fulham, each delivered a goal and an assist in their opening match, underlining the attacking potential in Mauricio Pochettino’s evolving side. Now they return to Stamford Bridge to face Brighton, a fixture that promises space and chances if it opens up the way their respective first games did.
Like Fernandes, Palmer and Joao Pedro enjoy home comforts in Gameweek 2. Unlike Fernandes, they share responsibility in a team still finding its exact attacking hierarchy. The upside is clear; the security, a touch less so.
So who gets the armband?
Strip away the noise and the fear of going without Haaland, and the case builds cleanly.
Haaland remains the default, the shield pick, the man who can ruin a Gameweek if you bet against him on the wrong day. But the data from 2025/26 points to a very specific edge this week: Fernandes at home is simply a more consistent, higher-ceiling asset than Haaland away.
Eight double-digit home hauls versus four big away returns. Three home blanks versus seven on the road. A promoted side at Old Trafford versus a tricky trip to Selhurst Park.
For those willing to be bold, Fernandes has to be backed to outscore Haaland in Gameweek 2.
Odegaard and Palmer sit just behind in the captaincy queue. Odegaard’s role and Villa’s bruised defence probably nudge him ahead of Palmer for those looking beyond the obvious two.
But the real question hangs over the armband at the very top. Do you cling to Haaland’s ownership safety net, or trust the numbers and give Old Trafford’s chief conductor the stage?
