Bradley Barcola’s Liverpool Start: A Muted Introduction
Bradley Barcola’s Liverpool start was supposed to be loud. Instead, it’s been cut short and muted.
Three games. No goals. Then a grimace and a substitution an hour into a Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid, and the summer signing’s momentum snapped just as it threatened to build.
The French winger, brought in to add thrust and unpredictability on the left, is now facing his first spell on the sidelines in England. The knock he picked up in Europe has ruled him out of the early-season rhythm, and Liverpool will have to wait to see the player they thought they were getting.
Manager's Update
On the eve of the third-round Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham, Andoni Iraola drew a clear line under any hope of a swift return.
“He is not ready to train with the team yet. He is training on his own, but he has started to touch the ball. We want him back as soon as possible,” the Liverpool manager said, speaking to Foot Mercato.
There is progress, but only in small steps. Ball work, yes. Full sessions, no.
“He still has some time to recover, and it will take a while,” Iraola added. “With all these long-term injuries, I think Giovanni Leoni has a slight edge over him.”
It’s a telling remark. While Barcola battles his body, others are nudging ahead in the internal pecking order. Leoni, mentioned by name, stands as the immediate beneficiary of the Frenchman’s absence, at least in Iraola’s eyes.
For Barcola, the challenge now is as much psychological as physical. A new league, a new club, a high-profile move, and already a halt. Liverpool’s attack is a brutal place to fall behind: the games come fast, the standards stay high, and opportunities rarely wait.
He has started to touch the ball again. The road back has begun. The real question is simple: when he returns, will he be chasing the team’s form, or driving it?
