Ben Stokes Joins Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16

Adelaide has landed a headline act. Ben Stokes, the former England all‑rounder who walked away from international cricket in June, will return to centre stage this summer with the Adelaide Strikers, signing on for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season.

It is a move that instantly shifts the balance of star power in the BBL. At 35, Stokes is set to become one of the most expensive players in the competition’s history, with 7News reporting a deal worth around A$500,000 (£264,000). That is marquee money for a marquee personality – and a clear statement of intent from the Strikers.

Stokes has never been one to tiptoe into a contest, and his words on joining Adelaide carried the familiar edge of a player who still burns for big moments.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16,” he said. Adelaide Oval, he added, is “an incredible place to play cricket,” while the Big Bash remains “a fantastic competition” with an “exciting group” at the Strikers. He spoke of meeting his new teammates, “getting stuck in and contributing to a successful season.”

The picture is easy to imagine: a packed Adelaide Oval, blue shirts everywhere, and one of England’s great modern match-winners striding out under lights in a league he has long threatened to dominate but never fully committed to.

There is another twist. Once the scourge of Australian hopes in Ashes epics, Stokes will now work under a former Australia captain. Tim Paine, in charge of the Strikers, did not bother to play down the scale of the signing.

“Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure,” Paine said. “We’re thrilled to have a player of his ability join our squad and can’t wait to see him put on a show.”
