Baartman Injury Forces South Africa to Reshuffle ODI Squad Against Australia

South Africa’s plans for Australia have taken an early hit, with seamer Ottneil Baartman ruled out of the upcoming ODI series after suffering a left hamstring injury.

Cricket South Africa confirmed the setback on Sunday, drawing a sharp line through a name that had steadily worked its way back into the national conversation. Baartman had only just returned to competitive cricket, turning out for Dolphins in their CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 opener against Titans this week, after a busy year that included Major League Cricket in June and July.

The comeback stalled almost as soon as it began. He bowled just five overs in Titans’ only innings and never made it to the crease in Dolphins’ second dig. The alarm bells rang, and CSA’s medical update soon followed: Baartman would play no part against Australia.

In his place, South Africa have turned to a fresh face with a growing reputation. Duan Jansen, who broke into the ODI side in the current series against Namibia, has been drafted in as Baartman’s replacement. The left-armer will link up with the squad in Durban on September 19, when the group assembles for what will be their first home ODI assignment against a major side since last year’s tour of India.

Jansen has wasted no time announcing himself. After featuring in the Namibia T20I tri-series, he carried that form into the one-dayers, grabbing 4 for 31 in the second ODI. With South Africa already 2-0 up in the three-match series, he was one of three changes for the final fixture, a sign that the management is willing to test depth while banking early results.

Baartman, by contrast, has endured a stuttering international calendar. He was part of the squad that toured India in November-December last year, South Africa’s last ODI assignment before the current Namibia series, and featured most recently for the national side in the New Zealand T20Is in March. The Australia ODIs were shaping as another chance to cement his role in a pace group constantly being rebuilt.

Instead, the injury leaves South Africa’s fast-bowling stocks looking both rich and fragile at the same time.

Fast-Bowling Options

Kagiso Rabada remains sidelined as he continues his own recovery from a hamstring problem. Gerald Coetzee has been recalled after missing ODI cricket since the 2023 World Cup, a move that underlines how quickly South Africa are circling back to trusted strike options. Anrich Nortje, though, has not been considered, keeping one of their most explosive quicks out of the equation.

The rest of the pace unit is a blend of youth, height, and raw speed: Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, and now Duan Jansen stepping into the breach. On paper, it is a group that can trouble Australia in any conditions. On the medical report, it is a group that needs careful management.

For Baartman, the wait to add to his limited international caps grows longer. For Jansen, the door has opened a little wider, and Australia is never a bad stage on which to prove you belong.
