Australia Drops Labuschagne for Upcoming African ODIs

Australia have drawn a hard line under their World Cup triumph, dropping Marnus Labuschagne from their one-day plans less than a year out from the next global tournament.

The reigning ODI champions named their squad for back-to-back series in Zimbabwe and South Africa later this month, and the most striking detail is who is missing, not who is back.

Labuschagne out in bold call

Labuschagne, a key figure in Australia’s 2023 World Cup win and a half-centurion in the final against India in Ahmedabad, has been cut after an extended lean patch.

He has been almost ever-present in the format in recent years, missing just five of Australia’s previous 56 ODIs. That continuity has not been enough to save him. The 32-year-old is one of five players omitted from the group that toured Pakistan and Bangladesh in May and June, alongside Matt Short, Ben Dwarshuis, Todd Murphy and Liam Scott.

It is a ruthless decision, and the timing is sharp: the next World Cup, to be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, is less than a year away.

Big guns back for South Africa

While Labuschagne steps aside, the fast-bowling heavyweights step back in.

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will both feature in the South African leg of the African tour, their availability underlining how seriously Australia are treating that series. Both are listed as “SA only”, ring-fenced for the tougher assignment.

Mitchell Marsh, who will again lead the ODI side, and Travis Head also return after sitting out the trips to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Their presence restores the core of the World Cup-winning batting order and leadership group.

New blood for a new cycle

The cut for Labuschagne opens the door for a new wave.

Emerging talents Cooper Connolly, Oliver Peake and Joel Davies have been drafted into the ODI squad, a clear nod to succession planning as Australia look to balance experience with fresh legs ahead of another World Cup tilt.

Connolly’s all-round flair, Peake’s promise with the bat and Davies’s versatility give the selectors different shapes to work with in the middle order and lower order. These are not token selections; they are auditions on foreign soil, in conditions that will mirror next year’s showpiece.
