Auqib Nabi Joins Surrey for County Championship

Auqib Nabi’s rise continues. The in-form Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler is heading to The Oval.

Surrey have signed the 29-year-old on a short-term county deal, confirming he will be available for their next three County Championship fixtures against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan. It’s a move born out of necessity for the reigning champions, but also a reward for one of Indian domestic cricket’s standout performers of the year.

“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run in,” said Alec Stewart, Surrey’s Director of Men’s Cricket. “We look forward to welcoming Auqib to the group this week.”

The schedule has bitten hard. Surrey’s attack has been stretched by workload and international call-ups, and Stewart has turned to a bowler whose numbers demand attention.

Nabi has just come off a season that changed his career. Spearheading Jammu and Kashmir’s historic Ranji Trophy campaign, he took 60 wickets and drove them to their maiden title, collecting the player of the tournament award in the process. Every round, his name kept resurfacing on the wickets chart. By the end, he wasn’t just a domestic workhorse; he was a headline act.

The rewards followed quickly. Delhi Capitals handed him a bumper IPL deal for the 2026 season, and he broke into their XI for five games, getting his first taste of the league’s intensity and scrutiny. From the Ranji grind to the IPL glare, his trajectory has been steep and relentless.

National selectors have noticed. Nabi recently turned out for India A and was drafted into the senior Test squad in Sri Lanka as replacement for Jasprit Bumrah. He did not debut, but sharing a dressing room at that level, training with the Test group, and preparing for a possible call-up marked another step in his rapid progression.

Now comes a different examination: English conditions, the Duke ball, and the expectation that comes with pulling on a Surrey shirt.

For Surrey, he offers fresh pace and stamina at a crucial stage of the season. For Nabi, three Championship games could be something more: an audition in foreign conditions, a chance to sharpen his craft, and one more argument for a full India cap that feels closer with every passing month.
