Virgil van Dijk on Cody Gakpo's Future at Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk does not deal in riddles. Asked if he wants Cody Gakpo to stay at Liverpool amid serious interest from Manchester City, the captain fired back with a question of his own.
“What do you think?”
The smile said enough. The words that followed removed any doubt.
“He's a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players.”
Van Dijk draws a line on Gakpo
Liverpool’s dressing room may be getting used to turbulence in transfer windows, but Van Dijk made his stance crystal clear after the 2-2 draw with Nottingham.
City are in active talks over a move for Gakpo, with the Dutch forward valued at around £80 million. Tottenham Hotspur have also registered their interest, yet reports suggest Pep Guardiola’s side have become Gakpo’s preferred destination.
Inside Anfield, the equation is more complicated. Bradley Barcola is undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Paris Saint-Germain, a deal designed to sharpen Liverpool’s attacking edge. Even with that, the club will not sanction Gakpo’s departure in the next 48 hours unless another winger walks through the door before the window closes.
Van Dijk, though, is looking beyond spreadsheets and squad balance.
“We'll see what the next few days bring,” he said. “I want him to stay not just because he's a top-class player, but also because he's a friend of mine. He's very important to us.”
There was no grand speech. Just a senior player spelling out the reality: Liverpool cannot afford to casually lose proven quality to a direct rival, especially when that player shares a bond with the captain at club and international level.
Barcola as proof of intent
While the Gakpo saga gathers pace, Barcola’s imminent arrival offers a different kind of statement.
Van Dijk’s eyes lit up when the France international’s name came up. He did not dress it up as a long-term project or a speculative punt.
“He's a good player, and he has pace,” the defender said. “I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he'll be welcomed with open arms.”
That memory – a burst of speed, a decisive finish on a big European night – is exactly the profile Liverpool want to inject into their forward line. For Van Dijk, it is also a reminder that Anfield still carries a pull at the very top end of the market.
“I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players,” he added. “This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't.”
No nostalgia. No pleading. Just a challenge: commit to the rebuild or move aside.
A captain’s message before the deadline
The clock is ticking loudly now. Liverpool are juggling the possibility of losing a key attacker, the arrival of a highly rated winger, and the reality of a squad still being reshaped.
Van Dijk’s focus is blunt and short-term.
“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference,” he said. “We'll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”
That is the line in the sand. Once the window shuts, there will be no more excuses, no more caveats about transition or uncertainty. Whoever is still in that dressing room will be expected to carry Liverpool through a defining season – Gakpo included, if Van Dijk gets his way.
