Power Struggle at ÖFB: Schöttel's Tenure Nears End
The fault lines inside the Austrian Football Association are no longer hidden. They are out in the open, running straight between sporting director Peter Schöttel and head coach Ralf Rangnick – and they now look set to cost Schöttel his job.
According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, the supervisory board will meet on Friday to decide on Schöttel’s final departure, a move that would close the book on a nine-year spell at the ÖFB. The federation has already pushed him to the sidelines. The message is clear: the relationship at the top of Austrian football is considered broken beyond repair.
A Partnership That Never Really Worked
The tension has been simmering for some time. What began as a collaboration between a long-serving federation man and a high-profile German coach has gradually turned into a cold war.
Marc Janko, former international and now a pundit with Sky, lifted the lid on the mood behind the scenes. “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” he said of the looming split. His words carried the tone of confirmation rather than shock.
Janko described a working relationship that effectively ceased to exist. With Schöttel “and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” he explained. The real turning point? Rangnick stopped going through the sporting director altogether. “It is indeed the case that for some time Rangnick, in all the matters that are important to him, has not been doing that via Peter, but via other people.”
Once a national team coach bypasses the sporting director, the power structure is no longer a structure. It is a standoff.
End of a Successful Chapter
If Friday’s meeting confirms his exit, Austrian football will be saying goodbye to one of the architects of its most productive modern spell.
Schöttel, now 59, joined the ÖFB setup in 2017 as U19 coach. Within two months he had been elevated to overall sporting director, entrusted with shaping the national team’s sporting direction. Results followed.
Under his watch, Austria qualified for the European Championship in back-to-back cycles, reaching the last 16 in both 2021 and 2024. For a country long stuck between potential and frustration, that consistency mattered.
The biggest landmark came last summer, when Austria finally returned to a World Cup finals after a 28-year absence. The campaign ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the symbolic weight of simply being there again was huge. It was the kind of achievement that usually buys time and influence.
Not this time. Not with the head coach and sporting director pulling in different directions.
Prödl Waiting in the Wings
Power vacuums do not last long in football federations. Even before an official decision has been taken, the talk has already turned to the next man up.
Krone reports that an internal favourite has emerged: Sebastian Prödl. The former Bundesliga defender, best known for his long stint with Werder Bremen, has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024. Inside the association, his work is said to be highly valued.
There is, however, one attribute that stands above all others in the current climate. Prödl is believed to enjoy an “exceptionally good” relationship with Rangnick. In a federation now reshaping itself around the head coach’s influence, that may be the decisive factor.
Schöttel’s era brought stability, qualification, and a long-awaited World Cup return. His likely successor’s main qualification? Harmony with the man on the touchline. For Austria, the next chapter will not just be about who leads the sporting department, but about how much power the national coach now truly holds.
