Nick Woltemade's Future at Newcastle: Borussia Dortmund's Interest
Nick Woltemade’s Newcastle future is edging towards a decisive week – and Borussia Dortmund may yet provide the escape route.
The German forward, whose situation on Tyneside has felt uncertain all summer, has seen interest spike again after a sharp cameo in Newcastle’s 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. He only had a little under 20 minutes, but he made them count.
Dortmund forced back into the market
In Germany, the domino that could change everything has already fallen. BILD report that Borussia Dortmund are seriously weighing up a late attacking move after Giannis Konstantelias suffered an ACL injury, confirmed over the weekend. A major summer signing sidelined before he can make an impact – it leaves a hole that needs filling quickly.
That search has pushed Woltemade back towards the top of Dortmund’s list.
“This setback could force Borussia Dortmund back into the transfer market,” BILD journalists Michel Schröer, Jörg Weiler and Yannick Hüber wrote, naming Woltemade as a prominent option under consideration. The interest is not a sudden whim. Dortmund tracked him earlier in the window and are said to have made initial contact weeks ago about the 24-year-old.
A permanent deal, though, looks complicated. Dortmund’s finances make a full transfer difficult at this stage, so a loan is seen as the realistic play if they decide to move.
Newcastle’s record buy on the block
That would suit Newcastle’s stance. TalkSPORT reported last week that the club are actively looking to move on their £69 million (€80 million) record signing, a figure that has hung heavily over Woltemade since his arrival. The market has not been short on possibilities.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Napoli have already spoken to Newcastle about a loan deal. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has mentioned talks over a potential return to Stuttgart, while RB Leipzig are also credited with interest from the Bundesliga.

A reminder in north London
While the rumours swirl, Woltemade has done what he can on the pitch. At Tottenham on Saturday, with Newcastle already ahead, he stepped off the bench in the 71st minute alongside Sean Steur and quickly made his presence felt.
From a Lewis Hall corner, Woltemade rose and steered a clever header back across goal. Yoane Wissa pounced, finishing off the move to seal the 2-0 victory. It was a simple contribution on paper, but a timely reminder of his aerial strength and awareness in the box.
For a player being quietly ushered towards the exit, it was a pointed intervention.
Dependent on Newcastle’s own business
Inside the club, Woltemade’s fate still appears tied to Newcastle’s incoming deals. The Magpies are closing on an agreement with Lille for Matias Fernandez-Pardo and have sounded out other attacking options as they try to reshape the frontline before Tuesday’s deadline.
If those moves land, the path to a loan exit becomes far smoother. If they stall, Newcastle may yet decide they cannot afford to lose another forward option, especially one with his profile.
For now, BILD are clear: Dortmund are considering Woltemade, but no bid has gone in. The urgency, though, is real. Konstantelias’ serious injury has opened a late gap in Edin Terzić’s squad, and a loan would give Dortmund a ready-made attacking option while offering Newcastle a clean, temporary solution to a complicated record signing.
