Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Denies Assault Charges in Court

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has appeared in court after being accused of assaulting his wife, charges the MK Dons winger firmly denies.

The 34-year-old, a former Premier League forward with Cardiff City and Wolves, is alleged to have attacked his wife, Saira Mendez-Laing, at their luxury home in Shenstone, Staffordshire, in June.

Police were called to the property and Mendez-Laing was subsequently arrested and charged with assault by beating.

He appeared at Cannock magistrates’ court on Friday, arriving on crutches. In a brief hearing, the Birmingham-born player spoke only to confirm his name, age and address, before entering a not guilty plea to a single count of assault by beating.

The court heard that Saira, the mother of his child, had allegedly been repeatedly struck over the head and suffered an arm injury during the incident. The confrontation is said to have started with a “disagreement about a phone”. Mendez-Laing denies any physical attack took place.

Charges were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service last month.

District Judge Joseph O’Connor granted conditional bail and scheduled a trial for January next year, setting up a significant legal date in the middle of the League One season.

Mendez-Laing, who represents the Guatemala national team through his mother and maternal grandmother, has carved out a long professional career in England. He scored four goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Cardiff in the 2019/20 campaign before leaving the club in September 2020.

Off the pitch, his relationship had recently been in the public eye for happier reasons. Mendez-Laing and Saira were married in June last year, with MK Dons marking the occasion by posting a photograph from their wedding day on the club’s official social media channels alongside a congratulatory message.

Now the forward faces a very different kind of scrutiny. With MK Dons currently 19th in League One, the club confirmed it could not comment on an ongoing court case, leaving both his future on the pitch and the outcome in court to be decided in the months ahead.
