Nathan Collins Faces Injury Setback Ahead of Nations League

Republic of Ireland captain Nathan Collins faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the Nations League campaign after suffering a calf injury with Brentford.

The centre-back was forced off during Brentford’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland in the Premier League last weekend, and the damage is serious enough to rule him out until after the upcoming international window.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews confirmed the setback in his pre-match press conference before the Bees’ game against Bournemouth, drawing a firm line through Collins’ name for the next few weeks.

“No, he won't be involved this side of the international break. Unfortunately, he's picked up a calf injury,” Andrews said, explaining that the defender had tried to grit his way through the problem.

“He probably felt it a little bit earlier in the game and tried to play through it, naturally, like he would, given the type of character he is and being one of our leaders and our captains. So, no, unfortunately he won't be involved.”

For Ireland, the timing could hardly be worse. Collins, already a central figure with 40 caps, has become one of the pillars of Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side, both as a defender and as captain.

Hallgrimsson’s team open their Group B3 campaign away to Kosovo on Thursday, 24 September, before travelling to face Israel three days later. The schedule then swings back to Dublin, where the Irish host Austria at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, 1 October, before closing the extended international window with a second meeting against Israel at a neutral venue on Sunday, 4 October.

With four games packed into eleven days and their captain struggling to make the start line, Ireland’s Nations League plans now hinge on how quickly Collins’ calf heals – and how well his teammates cope without their defensive leader if it does not.
