Manchester United Target Bradley Locko as Left-Back Solution

Manchester United’s search for a left-back is heading into the final stretch of the window, and the profile is becoming clearer: reliable, attainable, ready to compete from day one. Brest defender Bradley Locko now sits firmly in that category – and crucially, he wants the move.

United’s co-owners INEOS have been weighing up options for weeks, with the position flagged as a priority area before the deadline. The club looked at a marquee name in Alejandro Balde, but quickly ran into hard reality. Barcelona’s valuation, combined with the wages involved, pushed any deal beyond what United are prepared to commit at this stage.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined that stance, explaining that United held talks with Jorge Mendes about Balde around a week ago, only to step back once the costs became clear. The appetite to strengthen remains. The appetite to overspend does not.

So the focus has shifted to what United see as a smarter lane: an experienced, ready-made left-back who can offer competition and cover without consuming the bulk of the budget. Romano likened the approach to the Sergio Reguilon loan from Tottenham – not a superstar, but a dependable solution with a proper top-level profile.

That is where Locko comes in.

The 24-year-old Frenchman, under contract at Brest until 2027, has emerged as one of several names under consideration. According to journalist Dylan McBennett, posting on X on August 28, Locko is open to leaving Brest for Old Trafford in these final days of the summer window. He is not alone in that regard – McBennett notes “numerous left-backs” are keen on United – but Locko is now firmly in the frame.

He is not a headline-chasing signing. He is a football decision.

Since joining Brest in 2023, Locko has carved out a solid reputation in Ligue 1. Five assists in 67 appearances in all competitions hint at his contribution going forward, but his appeal to United lies just as much in his consistency and age profile: old enough to have proper experience, young enough to grow into a long-term option.

INEOS want exactly that sort of balance. A player who can step into Michael Carrick’s squad and compete immediately, without the financial strain and expectation that a Balde-level deal would bring. Someone who can stabilise a problem position while United reshape the rest of the squad.

The club are expected to act before the window closes. Romano has been clear: United are still working on a left-back and he “expects them to sign there” before the deadline. The hunt is not cosmetic. It is active.

Now the question is simple. With time running out and the market tightening, do United push ahead for a pragmatic pick like Locko, or hold their nerve and risk going short in a key position again?
