Liverpool's Pursuit of Ismaila Sarr Intensifies Amid Transfer Challenges

Liverpool refuse to step back from Ismaila Sarr – even as another winger slips through their fingers.

The Anfield hierarchy, led by Fenway Sports Group, have already seen one wide target drift away towards Aston Villa. They are determined not to watch a second do the same.

Ismaila Sarr has moved to the top of Liverpool’s winger shortlist. The Crystal Palace forward has already been the subject of a £50 million offer, reported on August 26, which The Mirror said the player himself was keen to accept as he eyes a move to Anfield before the window shuts next week.

Crystal Palace, though, stood firm.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool’s opening bid was rejected, with the London club’s “plan” to keep the 28-year-old Senegal international. Palace know exactly what they have: a proven Premier League winger, in his prime, under contract, at a time when elite wide forwards are scarce and expensive.

Liverpool’s response? Go again.

Sky Sport Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on August 28 that Liverpool are “making another push” for Sarr, with a fresh proposal being prepared for Palace. The message from Merseyside is clear: this is not a token enquiry, this is a pursuit.

The situation is not without danger. Tavolieri also noted that Al Ittihad are closely monitoring developments and could move if Liverpool’s talks collapse. In a market where Saudi Pro League clubs can outmuscle almost anyone financially, any hesitation carries risk.

So Liverpool push, Palace resist, and a Saudi wildcard waits in the wings. The clock is ticking.

Minteh and Mbaye: targets who slipped away

Sarr’s rise to the top of Liverpool’s list comes after failed moves elsewhere.

Liverpool first tried to prise Yankuba Minteh from Brighton and Hove Albion. Brighton, typically uncompromising sellers, set their price at £70m. Liverpool tested that stance with two bids below the valuation. Brighton did not blink. No agreement, no deal.

Attention then turned to Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye. Another young winger, another high ceiling, another hefty fee. PSG wanted £60m. For Liverpool, that number proved too steep, and they stepped away.

They will not get a second chance.

On August 28, David Ornstein reported that Aston Villa have reached an agreement in principle with PSG to sign the 18-year-old for €55m. The deal is now being finalised, with the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris highlighted as crucial to unlocking the move.

While Liverpool weigh up structures, valuations and second bids, Villa have moved decisively, adding yet another high-upside attacker to Unai Emery’s squad.

So Liverpool stand at a familiar late-window crossroads. One winger gone to Brighton, another heading to Villa, a third courted by Saudi money. Their next offer for Ismaila Sarr cannot afford to miss.
